Map(dot)uk and Maps(dot)uk have only been registered for about 48 hours, but both have picked up typeins - 36 and 55 respectively. Shows that there is some "latent" typein traffic waiting for good .uk to be switched on. I would therefore expect that extremely popular sites (the Alexa 500s of this world) can expect thousands of additional visitors a day by switching on their .uk.

NOTE: because of the way the .co.uk versions are configured, I can't provide detailed comparable figures, but let's just say that they're "higher" because that much I am certain of.

I myself looked at map and maps after you posted you had registered them just to see if you had put anything on them

This was on the post in SF thread asking if people had registered uk's

Might the traffic be just people from acorn having a nosy?

That might account for some of it. Time will tell - I don't expect there to be "residual" interest in them for very long based on that thread.

Back in the day (before I stuck a site on it) Maps(dot)co(dot)uk used to get over 5,000 typeins a month consistently, so the numbers for the .uk version aren't in any way strange.

Reminds of "back in the day" when bubblegum.co.uk would regularly get 3,000 typeins per day !

Why? Was there a popular site associated with it?

Was it bubblegum club? Some sort of flash gaming web site for people who were bored at work?

Why do you propose maps.uk (& map.uk) is getting any type-ins? Aside from us Acorners that is.

Visitors were looking for bubblegumclub.com which surprisingly is now a parked page. Something to do with cartoon characters I seem to recall.

How many visits a day does maps co.uk get as a standalone site?

Edwin's going to wish he hadn't started this thread in a minute if he's going to get all these questions! :D ;)

I doubt it, let's be honest, Edwin is promoting .UK harder than Nominet and Stephen Fry combined :D

Not really, I'm just not going to answer them. The number of visits to the .co.uk has no bearing on whether the singular (and the other .uk) get type-ins.

Surely the maps.co.uk visits per day one has to be answered there or there abouts? I mean if it gets 10 visits a day, then 55 type ins for maps.uk is just some Acorners look at it surely.

Also - how are you measuring type in traffic?

I know others did, but I didn't ask for numbers, just a proposal as to why the .uk should get any type-ins.

You could knock me down with a feather (and colour me flabbergasted) if any .uk websites were getting any deliberate type in traffic, aside from our little domain group. As to a website getting additional traffic due to the .uk being used - can you hear me snort from there :)? Sorry Edwin, you've been drinking the kool-aid.

Let's imagine a singular scenario where a website gained one additional visitor. Let us imagine someone typing in telegraph.uk, deliberately. Let us further imagine that they either did not get, or choose not to use, a Google search result showing telegraph.co.uk, a Chrome page saying "did you mean telegraph.co.uk?", an ISP error page full of adverts for telegraph.co.uk, or one of the many many routes mistakes of this form are dealt with. So what happened next? They type in theguardian.com. There, that is a scenario where having the .uk registered and either used or redirected would have given a single extra visitor.

Can anyone think of any other routes by which additional traffic may be gained by turning on the .uk?

Maps in the .co.uk gets about 700 direct type-ins a month (694 in the last 30 days according to Google Analytics).

maps(dot)co(dot)uk has 880 searches a month on Google (that's people typing the domain name in full into Google) vs 673,000 for Google.co.uk. It has been well known in the .com world for a long time that Google searches are an (imperfect) analogue for type-ins as they provide an indication of the volume of intended type-in behaviour (you can assume that the people typing full domains into Google search are just less clued in about how their browser's address bar works - not surprising when many browsers blur search and address bar functionality together).

A simplistic calculation would suggest that Google gets approx. 765x as much direct typein traffic as a result as Maps does i.e. a little over 500,000 monthly visits from typeins.

It is not possible to distinguish between "google uk" and "google.uk" searches because the Google keyword tool treats them the same, but it is plausible to assume that at least some of the 450,000 searches a month for one of those two expressions are indicative of .uk typeins waiting for "google.uk" to be activated.

Also worth noting that Google keyword tool indicates 823,000 searches a month for "www.google.co.uk" vs 6,600 for "www.google.uk" - the fact that the latter gets any figure to speak of indicates that typeins WILL be forthcoming when the URL is activated. The search figures for the fully qualified maps URL are 90 and 20 for the .co.uk and .uk respectively.

Many, many years ago (before many of you understood what domain names were, I'd imagine) ;) it was possible to pay to register subdomain names of the Columbian domain name "uk.co" which was registered to Nominate.com / BB Online, Net Registrar in a similar way to how Nomination/CentralNIC operate "uk.com". It was wiped off the face of the Internet back in 2003. I tested the type in traffic of a number of domain names that were very similar, if not the match, to high traffic generic domain names registered in .co.uk at the time. It was surprising to see how many type ins the matching "uk.co" received at the time. Things might have changed now people use search engines more rather than type in directly.

Sure, these are called mistakes. On the same basis Google should register every typo of their name.

Neither registering the .uk or typos, however, will gain them any additional traffic.
