Has anyone else noticed that the trend of using facebook accounts and twitter hash tags at the end of advertising seems to be dying out a bit.

I see twitter # tags in use a bit more trying to be funky, but even that seems to be fading away.

What I seem to be noticing on adverts is the "go search for company xyz"

I wonder if this is a just a fashion thing and online marketeers might actually go full circle and start using the good old domain soon!

A company who bought a name off me recently, they told me "facebook charge you per X many views, they charge you to get into peoples timelines, otherwise you only show on a few, they charge you for everything and then they show g*d d*mn mo%$er f*&^ing competitors adverts on your f*&^ing page", that's pretty much word for word.

So they "claim" they were spending thousands per month sending people to their facebook page, and at first it was good value but facebook at started charging for more and more and for visibility so now they tell them to search for their brand name and they bid on the brand name and spend time trying to stop other people bidding on it so they are the only advert.

What they did say, is they have a facebook comment system still, which works well (but they said some API changes came recently and more are coming all the time so they are thinking of dropping that too.

It could be the first signs of a demise of facebook. Everyone said MSN Groups would last forever, then they said faceparty would never go, then they said myspace was king, then they said habbo hotel/bebo were the kings, is facebook next ?

Edit: The name they bought off me were a fixed price name, relating to one product they sell only the domain were a generic term for their brand product in the fitness market. Only early £xxx so nothing special, oddly its on fasthosts nameservers and shows a sedo for sale page.

    Interesting post thanks.

Its almost like the nets entering another sort of transition phase (web 3.0!), but to me its not clear which way its going yet.

I forgot to add, perhaps the new marketing trend will be trying to use new GTLD's to grab users attention and standout with new extensions, could be epic $$$$ fail time though, which would of course be great for traditional domain extension investors.

Let's hope so. I would always be using my own domain name in any paid advertising. Doing anything else just seems silly.

i could well be wrong, but the impression i get is that fb is a bit more intelligent than those that have come before them, as in they know that they could be discarded into obscurity virtually overnight.

i would suspect that if there's enough of a negative reaction to the way they are doing things now, they will adapt and change it to make sure it keeps working.

in respect of Skinner's client experience, i would suggest that fb, like anyone, would go right ahead and give them or anyone exclusive advertising, so long as they paid for it?

It's like property. It's always better to own your own freehold.

Build a business that someone else can switch off overnight and you only have yourself to blame when it goes wrong.

I have no idea, how it works.

The gist they explained to me, was they out their facebook address etc on their magazine articles, used it on video displays etc, then then people go to their page there are similar adverts for competitors on their page.

I just checked their page, and its showing me the mySN U705 laptop, refresh the page a few times, it shows various adverts from my recent searches.

I can't determine if these are google searches or facebook searches.

I just went to https://www.facebook.com/ford and there are no advert boxes on their page, but I went to the beach body people (no its not them) and they have 3 adverts for Alienware Laptops, Daxon Bedding and Gillette. So I'm guessing if you have enough money, like Ford or Honda money you can buy exclusive adverts. However the beach body people, myprotein, bulkpowders, and almost every other fitness page I checked, all had between 1 and 3 websites/adverts, all related to recent searches.

if it helps, i can assure you i use my facebook purely for messages and the odd game of scrabble (or similar). i don't use my acc to search for products or businesses.

90% of my product searches are on amazon and ebay, with 10% (at the max) being via google if i don't like what i saw cost wise on either of those.

after i have done a product search on amazon / ebay, wouldn't you know is the exact products or very similar that crop up on my fb advert feed from both of those companies.

i am assuming that something in the t & c said that by using them i was happy for amazon / ebay to track what i buy and advertise it to me on fb, then.

why exactly they would spend so much time, effort and money on advertising to me products that i have already bought off of them is beyond me, but hey, it seems to work for them ;)

I presume your browsing history is stored in the cookie but when you actually purchase it is not deleted so they carry on serving you the same ad's, I would image the cookie will be overwritten when you start a fresh session?
