The story goes from Nominet, that one individual takes great delight in emailing them using an automated system hundreds of emails a week with all the 'naughty' ltd company opt-outs...

    Anyone shed any light.. :)

You mean domains trading as companies but hiding their whois data?

To what ends is someone bothering to report them!

Clever. First I'd heard about it. Probably won't matter soon when the new Registry-Registrar privacy system goes live. Then the Registrant name will be obscured in the WHOIS too.

To be able to see the address, logically.

What happens if an address doesn't validate? How long does it keep trying and does it get released if it's not eventually validated?

This isn't WHOIS address opt-out related, which is what the original poster was referring to. That can be switched on or off and isn't related to data validation.

In answer to your question, research from here.

If somebody's really doing this, I'm surprised Nominet haven't taken their cue from the stream of emails and set up a similar check internally. Should be pretty easy since the whole database of UK companies can be licensed for a very modest annual fee. Given how keen Nominet are on "Whois" quality, it would seem like a bit of a no-brainer for them.

I remember a guy on here doing it, they would call nominet if someone had advertised a domain or site for sale with Adsense ads on, telling nominet something like they were trading and Whois status wrong.

Re privacy, any idea when nominet are rolling this out?

As for data validation nominet don't give a monkeys, their systems are inadequate, they do the minimum in policy and leave it to the registrars who don't give a monkey also.

I've done it when the domain name was clearly trading and I wanted to obtain an address to contact the Registrant. It's playing by the rules. I've also seen Nominet refuse to reveal contact details for a domain name where the Registrant individual had opted out of publishing their address in the WHOIS legitimately. Nominet informed the Registrant of the inquiry and of their subsequent refusal to reveal the Registants contact details.

Hopefully soon when the slightly revised Registrar Agreement is published (there was a request for comment about that last year with, from memory, three questions on it).

Just to clarify.. as a registrar will I be able to envoke opt-out using domain manager (be nice), or do I have to use a third party - the nice lady at Nominet I spoke to said it would be a 3rd party service providing privacy?

Purely out of interest how did you obtain the .uk when the .co.uk is registered to Host Europe Group/123-Reg/Domainmonster? :)

Or is it registered to you and simply under their Identity Protect registrar only privacy service?

I use DM whois services at the moment yes.

But as mentioned to you before i am interested in using the domain name for the services Nominet are bringing in. We'll see what happens.

Around 3 years ago we got an email from Nominet to say that one of our domains had it's whois hidden when it should be showing as it's a UK limited company.

Our postal address had always been on show, but around 2 weeks before the email from Nominet it turned out that it had been opted out by mistake. This had happened when some domain admin had been completed on other domains the tag hosts.

In short all domains had been opted out, but only a select few should have been!

I phoned Nominet to explain and the nice lady on the other end of the phone confirmed someone had made a complaint.
