Is it considered to be extremely poor practice to register a domain name with 2 adjacent hyphens, together generally?

Do they sell or are they worth anything or just generally pants?

I've registered only one of these kinds of names (it was I think, an exception, I hope! :???: ) and would be interested to see what others think.

    For example: credit--card.co.uk and similar.

    Cheers. :D

I wouldnt risk it being honest, I do have one domain that has hyphons between every character and I must confess that I have brought a domain name with numbers rather than characters as an experiment.

Just done a google on it but its in the top 10 but its not number 1 for typing in the url of it.

I think the more search engines go on some domain names wont be worth buying.

We have gone from having domains such as 123abc getting listed first because of the alphabetical listing style that used to be the search engines to more complex search engine algorthyms.

You might be lucky with this if you had the inbound links but cant see it being honest.

I have a www- as well which doesnt really do much.

Thanks Mark for your comments.

One thought that strikes me is as search engines don't appear to take much notice of hyphens (?) is to use the -- name for SE purposes and reg. another 'nicer' looking (easier to type in one) for visitors and promotion, etc. Use both side by side, etc.

Why don't you register one and then try to search engine optimise it and see what happens. Dashes are treated as spaces so it will be interesting to see how double dash is treated.

Have to agree with the posher end of the South West.

Just done a check for one of my domains that is three words seperated by hyphons and its nowhere.

Just checked the top 100 results in Google and sadly not to be seen.

Most of the top 10 does not have the search term in its title e.g if I'm looking for bedding plant

Only about two results are showing bedding plant

Only one domain has three hyphons in it between the words

and I think with just the one hyphon there is only two or three results in the top hundred containing a hyphon.

So in some results it shows that brand names with some well placed words will do just as well as having something bog standard such as beddingplant.co.uk

All depends on the field really and how many competion you have and how many inbound links that site has.

People talk about type in names but years ago it was claimed and it might be the same now that the UK market are more prone to using search engines than they are too type in an actual domain name.

I've had people come to my websites on say for example www.beddingplant rather than just adding the co.uk

I wish more people would do in direct typings as I would probaly be very rich by now.

As it is still on my first million sniff minus £99,999,99 worth of debts behind me lol
