Social Media: Stories, Strategies and Tips

Recently, I started to get back into social media.

I updated my LinkedIn account, fixed up the privacy settings on my Facebook account (Facebook Lists are great), and logged back into my Twitter account after a long absence. Also I'm using a pic (whereas in the past I was a little more camera shy).

My goals are:
1. Make more connections personal and professional
2. Reach my site visitors/customers (with certain accounts)
3. Learn more about the areas I'm working in
4. Increase traffic and revenues on my sites
5. Add benefit to my connections and reciprocate help (in the ways I can)
6. See and experience what all of the buzz is about

I'm already experiencing it. I recently commented about about a book via Twitter and within a couple of hours the author contacted me (I guess they receive alerts when their name/book is mentioned) and a mini-dialogue was opened. Funnily the book/author was social media focused also!

So i'm seeing the power of these tools, and I wondered if anyone else can offer any stories, suggestions, goals.

Also if there is a flaw in my plan, potential pitfalls (or I have spelt my name incorrectly somewhere) please let me know.

ps. I've connected with many AD-ers so far but would be great to connect wit more. Connect via the links in my signature or on my site http://www.matpac.co.uk (you can also see some of my current projects on the website too)

Great post, thanks for sharing that, there is no doubt that social media can be a very powerful way to reach out.

Thanks very much too for the inspiration, as I just nabbed connexion.org.uk which goes back to 2001 on Archive.org and has nearly 4000 exacts per month.

These are tough times, and often it does come down to who you know (to get the deal). Saying that I also think that it's less about using others but more about mutually beneficial relationships. From shout outs, barter agreements, sales/contracts, introductions to other people in their/your networks.

Would be great to hear others experiences of this stuff...

Anyone else feel like sharing?

I have been reading about the tools that people are using to automatically search for people to follow (given criteria), has anyone had experience of it?

I find that Twitter is hard work but can be useful on occasion. The problem is that you really need to keep at it - it's a regular conveyor belt once you establish a steady tweeting rhythm - and you also run the danger that if you get a bit "boring" for too many tweets in a row you'll suddenly see a drop in people following you.

One tip: whatever you do, don't participate in ANYTHING that automatically feeds updates to your Twitter account (e.g. Foursquare, Spotify, etc.) Basically 99.9999% of people couldn't care less that you're currently in a certain coffee shop, or listening to a particular music track. That's one sure-fire way to get me to unsub from somebody's feed, and from comments I've seen on other forums it's a widely held view...

Back in the day, I did get a couple of leads to geo domain swaps from Twitter, so it certainly proved to be of value.

I agree Edwin. I hate how FB defaults to alert me about Sandra finding an egg behind a tree in restaurant city... Like I have time to congratulate her!

I think certain rss feeds into twitter can be useful in bringing more traffic. All depends on content and audience.

It's nice to have a domain auction tweet retweeted to 1000 followers.

Thank you.
