Thumbs up Hi and domaining software

Hi all, newbie here.

Just starting with domaining. Just wondering what software I will need. Also what accounts I will need. SEDO (or similar) parking looks doable. And usually I use UK REG for domains. Is this a good/bad combo for covering my costs?

Also, is there any software that watches from dropped domains. I read that nominet DAS service can be helpful. Can anyone ellaborate.

I think I might focus on core .com's (if there are anyleft) and .co.uk. Where is best to look.

I also read that all the good domains are now on the secondary market. Again, where best to look.

Many thanks all and I lookforward to helping you out.

I do SEO btw if anyone wants any.

Ta,

Allan

For .co.uk, you can book expiring domains with a dropcatching service, or you can get a Nominet Tag, get Nominet DAC access, write a script and become a dropcatcher yourself.

There are a number of secondary domain marketplaces worth keeping an eye on, e.g. for .com NameJet and AfterNic.

DomainLore is interesting for .co.uk ...

Thanks very much accelerator. I had a few follow up questions if okay?

1) What are the major benefits of getting a TAG, getting acces to the DAC and writting a script VS just using a 3rd party dropcatch service?

2) Is there any software that I should be using to manage my domains?

3) Whats the most effective way to monetise a site? Methods I'm aware of are parking, mini sites with adsense, mini sites with CPA/rev share affiliate schemes and finally, fully blown sites (but I can't see how that is scalable).

My main aim is to build a portfolio which pays for its self and then hopefully sell 1 or 2 a year which give me a decent income. Is this an acheivable plan?

Very many thanks!!

Allan

1) You'll often find the best names already booked with dropcatchers, so the advantages of your own tag are being able to have a go at the big names. You'll have to be very good at coding to beat the other guys. Acquistion cost is also another plus of having your own tag and not having to use a dropcatcher.

2) Up to you. An Excel spreadsheets works for me, but there are some management solutions out there I believe.

3) I would say minisites with affiliate schemes, if you can come up with your own site template that can be quickly implemented for each domain.

4) Very achievable providing you have the skill to spot opportunities and can work out how to build sites that convert. Don't get carried away regging too many domains before you've learnt how to monetise them properly.

I use Domain Name Portfolio - DomainPortfolio.us (free) to 'manage' my domains, although it does not really manage your domains you can enter the registrar and renewal dates, it creates a website that allows you to list them for sale.

It is a little clunky and as such I have not got all my domains (see footer link) into it but better than nothing I suppose.

Will be interested to follow this thread to see what others use.
