Pagerank Explaination Anyone? :)

Hi!

I understand what pagerank measures (importance of page.. highest listing in search engine etc..) and why it is important to a site, but could someone please explain to me why people advertise their site as PR4, PR1, PR2 etc and what this means? I did try and read this article Pagerank Explained. Google's PageRank and how to make the most of it. but the formulae got a bit confusing for 9pm at night...

Regards, Will

That is simply the 'P'age 'R'ank of the site in question. Any site can have a Google Page Rank if it is indexed. On a scale of 0-10 the higher the number the higher your page rank...

From a SEO point of view though, many people are skeptical as to how favourable a site is that has a higher page rank than another although its purpose is to illustrate a sites 'authority' over other websites with lower page ranks based on inbound links from other indexed sites.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Yeah it did thanks Rich.

Is there an official ranking (like Google tells them ), or do people just estimate their Page Ranks or work it out with the official formula?

Regards, Will

The frequency in which Google updates site PR changes... there is no fixed schedule but updates are normally within 3-4 months of each other...

You can check a site/domain PR using a number of free websites on the net... I tend to use GoGoRank as its a clean site with zero ads or junk... many other sites allow you to check multiple domains and link to their PR graphics and things like that... You can also use a variety of PR toolbars, widgets and apps...

Be aware that it is easy to fake page rank so if buying a domain based purely on PR make sure you check that it isn't fake... A search in Google for 'Fake PR Checker' or something similar should present you with a site to use...
