I need some advice with buying a .co.uk

Hi I contacted the owner of a .co.uk domain name to see if they would consider seller.
They have agreed and we have been negotiating via email. They have come back with a price that seems fair and I am speaking with them later today.

The advice I need is on how to handle the transfer. I dont personally know this company so want to make sure in going to get my domain before I part with my money.

I have contacted Nominet and my hosting company none it seems can advice on such matters.

I have heared mixed reports on escrow services! Im in a bit of a dead end really Im unsure what the best way to handle the transfer will be. If anyone could give me some advice that would be great.

Thanks in advance

I have used Sedo Escrow before.

Domain Transfer*-*Sedo.com

Quote:
To get started with the Domain Escrow service, please send an email to transfers@sedo.us with the following information:

Domain name
Agreed Price (USD/EUR/GBP)
Seller's full name and email
Buyer's full name and email
Seller's Sedo Username
Buyer's Sedo Username
Which party has agreed to pay the Sedo commission fee (3% of the sales price)

Please register for a free Sedo account before submitting the transfer request if you do not have an Username. Both parties will be able to monitor the transfer status from within their account.

If you have any remaining questions about Sedo's Domain Escrow Service, please don't hesitate to contact our Domain Transfer team at transfers@sedo.us.
You can always split the fee (3%) 50/50 between yourself and seller (if they agree).

Hi, I was looking at them initially but I have heard mixed reports.
When I tried to contact them to ask their advice I failed to find a contact number which added to my concerns.

How long did the transfer take to go through when you used sedo?

I would email, rather than phone.

Depends on how quickly your payment is processed and the cooperation of the seller to transfer the domain.

Would expect 7-10 days.

I haven't had any issue's with them, despite the slagging off they get around here.

Nominet won't get involved. We base all our negotiations on a contract & trust. In the end, that's all you can do.

Best bet is to talk to Rob over at Hey - Domain Services and Internet Media who could advise and I believe he also had contracts that are for sale!

Hi, i have used escrow.com before, someone purchased a name from me for a reasonable amount but they were based in the USA, it all worked out fine for both parties.

With experience, you can usually get a "feel" for how reliable a company will be. Some things to look for:

- Once you have agreed sale price, ask them to e-mail you an invoice. Take a look at the invoice and judge how professional it looks.

- Does the company have a physical office whose address you can verify.

- Do they have a landline tel which you can ring and they always answer.

- Are they are registered limited company whose details you can check at Companies House.

- Are they registered for VAT with a VAT number?

- Do they own other domain names that you can verify the address on?

- Are they actively selling domains, in which case ask them if they are a member of any forums and check the feedback for their user ID.

These may not give 100% like escrow, but you can rapidly build up a picture of how reliable a company might be.

Money Sedo

I thought the commission was 10% not 3% ?
Also sedo claim the 10% fee includes the escrow service but then on another page they clearly state that the escrow service is FREE

10% is for selling through Sedo and yes comes with free escrow, if you just use them for Escrow for a domain not listed there then it's 3% escrow charge.
