Thoughts on ICANN generic tlds

I was just wondering about people's thoughts on the ideas behind the new 'generic' TLDs

Reselling / new 'extension'
e.g. someone buys .betting

would they be reselling these kind of names?

williamhill.betting
ladbrokes.betting
victorchandler.betting

.bank
.shop
.forum

Or is the whole process more for brand protection like

coca.cola
acorn.domains (ch-ching )

etc

Acksherly - that's a very interesting question!

The way I've seen it explained, they buy a "brand name" extension - so, like "supermarket.tesco" as a domain. Re-selling was not mentioned as an option. Being able to buy the generic extensions you describe could be a real "shutdown" tool, if applied properly.

At the projected price of £185k per domain, as I have seen it explained, it only seemed like a serious deal for major companies. But if you can buy a generic extension for £185k and sell domains, this could be a seriously interesting opportunity.

Any more suggestions?
