Im new to domaining, very new.

I own the domain name www.moonpiglet.co.uk and i was looking to develop a childrens orientated entertainment site on it and pick up some residual income. Having now realised that Moonpig.com Personalised Greeting Cards has a brand name called moonpiglet i now dont know if this is such a good idea. There are no registered trademarks that i can see so i dont know if i would be doing anything wrong.

I suppose i would also be curious to find out if anyone, maybe even moonpig, would be interested in buying the domain?

Opinions are greatly appreciated

Welcome to acorn, obviously you should always do your research before setting up a company name or idea, as someone bigger with rights can always come in take it down in a day - if they win, however when it comes to trading names, there's usually a number of articles which refer to the products and categories you can work around, if similar to the other entity then may have a problem.

There's nothing wrong with holding another company's name or idea or pairings of words in another extension, but expect them to come knocking if they fancy it, if you want a quick flip just email them but that can sometimes set off the legal beagle.

Many thanks for your informative response. I really am after quite a quick flip if i can get it. The only thing i would be wary of is them laying claim to the domain.

I suppose, if they didnt buy it in the first place, it may not seen very valuable to them.

If they don't own any trademark, they don't have any intellectual property rights, so this is not really an issue.

The type of domain you have bought is a (very) speculative "brandable" domain. However, the most valuable domains are generic terms related to profitable online products and services. You can get an idea of what domains are valuable by looking at domainprices.co.uk.

What was the thought process that led you to come up with the domain name "moonpiglet.co.uk"? I'm curious, as "moon" and "piglet" are two words I would never have associated with each other - unless there's some expression I've just not heard of...

Ive got to be honest, i was just typing random words. Having a spare half hour i decided to be completely random. It must have been in my mind somehow though but perhaps some subliminal advertising on a moonpig advert lol.

One of these things where the result could have been awful or genius...only time will tell which :P

I'm no expert, but I don't think they'll believe you if you said, "I happened to buy this domain" and then found out you existed, so wondered if you want to buy it...

I think it would be different if the words were more generic, but "moon" and "piglet" is such a unique and unusual combination!

Although, I guess stranger names have been registered

yeah its strange to think but i must stress that the domain i have is moonpiglet and i had only every heard of moonpig before doing research.

A punt us a punt but just wanted to get opinions on it from you guys incase someone had gone through something similar

Wish I had reg compare the meercat, what a great site. Joking aside I reg some strange ones and they have sold well, bought spotit.co.uk in my earlier days and that sold for mid £xxx, well worth the £7 reg fee at the time.

You never know.
