Money How or what to do with a good domain to earn some pocket money

Hi there i have been trying to learn lots over the last year and finally had a dabble at buying some ok generic domain names, at first i parked them with sedo for 6 - 8 weeks and got some ok view numbers ppc etc on each of them and to my surprise at least two of them where sitting there front page of google search half way up the page and hadnt really touched them so i took two or three domains and thought i would try store burst as parking is ok i guess for what it is but is never gonna buy ya a big mars bar. I am no website builder but have a honest interest in it and find it fun so i put together a few affiliate shops with store burst and in the last 2 weeks had some ok numbers again 200-300 views 10-15 clicks no sales, all the sites sit on google front page when generic term is searched. I have researched store burst etc via this forum and have found alot of people refere to a mini site and earning better via adsense etc. I just wondered if anyone could give me some tips, if they went through similar experience. Of course we all like playing with domains etc but would be nice to get on the correct path to earning some pocket money, well maybe a few beers. Any help would be most appreciated

Depending on the names you could make them into mini affiliate sites.
It would depend if they lend themselves to products or services that are bought.

The main cost with affiliate marketing is time... You can use wordpress which is free, probably spend about 50 quid a year on hosting and then there are no other costs.

If you find it fun / interesting to build sites and have got some time to put in I would definitely do it as apart from the earnings you will also be enhancing the value of the domains.

Feel free to PM me the names and I will suggest some affiliate schemes etc

Well it sounds like you have made a good start.

If you are getting good traffic without promoting the domains it seems like you can do even better if you develop them.

Developing regularly updated websites with pertinent, compelling, relevant and unique content is the route to long term profitability.

Wordpress software, which you can download for free from wordpress.org, is a reliable and reasonably easy way of building viable sites.

Monetisation of such sites using Google Adsense is probably a good way to start. Although, not always suitable for all types of sites, most people start with Adsense before progressing to other monetization options.

If your domains relate to actual products then an ecommerce site will probably make you more money. Not everyone wants to hold stock, for obvious reasons though, so going down the affilliate ad route is the best option.

If you want to take this seriously then I suggest you join a web developers forum and read / learn as much as you can. Ask questions there and build up your knowledge that way. A sound knowledge of search engine optimization techniques is particularly important for long term success.

In the shorter term it does no harm to look for websites on similar domains to those you own and see if they are developed and the techniques and software they have used to develop these sites.

People here can help you on your journey and the domain name advice here is usually fairly good. However, I think most people on Acorn specialise in domain names, first, and are developers second so I think you would learn a lot from a web developers forum.
