| Junior Member | Basic TLD Questions
Hello everybody, Some more basic questions, coming not just from the perspective of domaining or minisiting but also developing websites for any purpose. I hope this isnt too general any help appreciated... How do I decide which TLD ('s) to obtain? In what situations might one TLD have an advantage over another? Are there any that should be avoided and why? Thanks... |

Generally speaking, if you are marketing for UK only traffic I wouldn't touch anything but the following: .com .net .org .co.uk .org.uk If you plan on marketing for both UK and US traffic, then you'd knock off the bottom 2 as you'll find it difficult to rank positively in google.com results with a .uk domain. |

.co.uk if you are targeting the United Kingdom .org.uk can rank well for UK, although it probably wont get direct type in's .com goes without saying... .net/.org good for keyword domains |

I'm pretty much in agreement with the responses said thus far. If targeting UK only, definitely stick with .co.uk or .org.uk (.org.uk probably more for SEO on the exact domain keywords). For international, .com for company name/presence, .net/.org for SEO on exact domain keywords.

If you are looking to sell on your domains, then focus on .com and .co.uk. When selling domains, the extension is so important to the sale price. Restricting yourself to .com and .co.uk would be a good rule of thumb until you gain confidence. The other extensions can be much, much harder to sell. Rgds

Also note that some extensions, e.g. .tv, are much more expensive to renew than the .com, so don't pick up too many when you're just starting, as those renewals soon mount up. Rgds
