Some basic name questions

Hello Everybody,

Some more basic questions, this time about names... again very general and perhaps stupid.

What makes a good name/what is the purpose of a name?

What makes a bad name/what names do you NOT use?

What can you do to research if a name has any potential?

Any help appreciated, thanks...

This question would take a long time to answer in full, but very briefly, generic names in top extensions that exactly relate to terms which attract high advertising revenue are highly desirable. If you open a Google AdWords account, that can give you an indication of the PPC spend, which will help with evaluation. Plus you have the various sale reporting sites such as DomainPrices.co.uk.

Perfect answer. Also don't waste your money before careful research. Google simple search is a good start.

Thanks guys,

Good answers and advice.

I've noticed that the cost of registering varies wildly...

does anyone have any advice concerning choosing a provider?

what can I expect for my money?

Also I know some allow a privacy option (whois etc), do they all? is there a way of perhaps setting something up so I am contactable but my personal details are not there for the world to see?

Thanks again

good names for me, basically are : Rare, Short, Generics, Have descent or better monthly exact searches [local exacts prefered for cctlds], and big industries with tons of potential endusers.

what did I do for research? Go to google keywordtools to see some stats [searches, CPC +keywords competition] and overture popularity tools. check the keywords' Trademark status at trademarkia.com and domain names history at archives.org ...Then I'll search for the potential endusers that are willing to pay for my domains

hope that will help
