Is it worth having a .co name ?

I have been looking for a couple of domans, related to two products.

Surprise surprise the .com and .co.uk are taken, but the .co names are still available.

Are these worth having ?

Will these 'take off' in the future ? that's probably a hard question to answer, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

The .co extension seems to be taking off quite nicely although i dont own any of them. The main thing to consider is that the keywords fit the .co (company) extension before registering it.

If you want an opinion on the domain then feel free to pm me.

I don't own any .co yet either, but if I just needed a few domains for a flagship site it is definitely something I would consider. They are very brandable, and as .co is also thought of as "company", that really helps. Providing you are regging a generic term I would think it's a good option.

There was an article about .co and the Columbian domain name registry on dnjournal.com a while back if you want to find out more.

... also just to say if I needed to reg a lot of names I might look at other extensions as they are a bit pricey on renewals.

I'm no expert, but I'm not a fan. I think their hey day was all the hype surrounding them when they first came out.

If you expect visitors to come via search engines and you can rank well enough then it's probably ok, but who knows how many visitors you'll lose out on because they type .com directly into the address bar the second time they try to visit your site. But that depends on who your audience is and how much they understand the internet. Perhaps a clear message to favourite the site or follow on twitter might offset some of it.

I've noticed that Overstock.com is attempting to rebrand itself as O.co. I understand why they might want to re-brand itself, however using a .co that redirects to overstock.com is a very interesting strategy. Are they trying to get O.com? I don't know. But, I agree that the .co is probably not going to go anywhere. What matters most is the actual branding of the name itself.

just spend the money on a large Mcdonalds Chicken Sandwich and Banana Milkshake...it would be more satisfying and you wouldn't regret it in twelve months time (renewal)

I've looked at the .co names. Godaddy is heavily promoting it because it increases their revenue whenever a person or organization has to register yet another tld. There is probably no end to this type of problem. How much is enough?

I decided to ignore the whole craze. The more confusion there is in the marketplace (.co no doubt appeals to those who are concerned about typos), the more valuable becomes the .com, which is the default tld when there is confusion. And I simply don't want to get caught up in trying to register every possible version of a registered domain name. It would be crazy.

They can be quite good if you want to pick up keyword rich domains that have otherwise been taken and sat on by other registrants.

Also, google announced that .CO domains will be “Google-National” so they'll have the same geo-targeting options available as the other generic TLDs, such as .com, .net, .biz and .org etc.

If you are wanting a name to build a brand around it may be better going for the .com or .co.uk as not to cause confusion. It depends what you need a domain for really.

I'm sure all web hosts are promoting it, because they want to make money
