Exacts

Hello,

When looking for a domain which could potentially be turned into affiliate sites what sort of exacts do you look for to make it worthwhile?

For example I have a found a lot of nice generic names FTR in the fashion sector, though they have little exacts (Around 1,000 - 2,500). The average price of the products is around �30 - �60.

Worth developing, or should I be looking for the >10,000 names?

Hi JackG,

Finding an exact >10,000 that is not already registered is virtually impossible, so many of just settled for the >2500 or less or buy some good and develop it.

I have an exact that is around 1999 which makes money when it is not buried by G. So if you can find a few exacts that you can dominate the market with then you might be able to cover your cost + profit.

I just think that the lower the exacts the lower the chance of conversion, maybe I'm wrong. As the products are of reasonable value but low exacts compared to products which have low value but have high exacts there is potential to earn more then sites with high exacts.

I hope you follow what I mean... I'm not sure my theory is right though.

It's really impossible to say.

For example, your diningroom domain, you can target loads of different phrases such as dining tables, cutlery, crockery, tablecloths etc, so although it might have relatively low exact matches, there is scope to develop it.

If you are looking at a very specific product domain then you have less scope to expand.

It also depends on the area, some products convert a lot better than others. You may convert 3% of the traffic you send through to a clothing merchant, but only 0.2% of traffic to a jewellery retailer.

I have an exact match product domain, been sat at #1 for the last year, has a quoted 3,600 exacts a month and it averages out at 15 a day for the exact match phrase, which is pretty useless, whereas a more generic domain could be added to to target different products etc so you are not limited by the exact match figures.

Niche is a very hard thing to pick and no-one can say it is worth/not worth doing without seeing all the info, such as domain, phrases, competition, merchants etc. Even then it is still hard. Some look great but just don't work, others that look ok do brilliantly.

Also, be careful if you are looking it the fashion sector. It would be a shame to get to the #1 spot just as it goes out of fashion.

I agree about the fashion going out of fashion comment. Luckily my fresh reg's are fairly common, I doubt they will go out of a fashion soon.

The problem is the majority of good domains are taken so it's picking up scraps at the moment, which I don't mind as I'm still effectively learning.

Slipper chartered accountants all same exacts 12100 but wouldn’t say same value… or even that they would all be easy as each other to sell..?

You can have a great name but lack the finances, ability, connections etc to utilize it and the companies that can already have a brand etc so won’t pay a good price… You can be waiting years to sell it and have made more registering not so good ones ?

Try and think end user if your not developing yourself ( even if you are ) it will save you registering lots of crap….Research the field you decide to buy as it’s a few pounds most people don’t and you end up with thousands of possible crap and maybe generic names you never get real money for or can ever sell.

The best way to start would be to develop a fresh reg, learn the basics of SEO/Web development then invest in a nicer domain on here or similar site. Domains can be very expensive but they can really be worth the investment as they will make your job easier on the long run.
