Newbie questions if you have the time.

Hello everybody and a good day to all

Thanks to everyone who gave me their time yesterday; you saved me hours of searching, without taking advantage I would like to ask a few more questions if that's OK.

I understand the basic rules around .co.uk and .org.uk but as the .co.uk is much harder to get hold of will a .org.uk extension carry the same weight in the search engines assuming everything else was equal IE content, backlinks?

Building minisites is time consuming but potentially more profitable than parking, which is the best platform wordpress, blogger or Google sites. I ask because I have made a couple of blogs on blogger and would like to keep my costs down; I understand that wordpress costs to host but blogger and Google sites are free?

Thank you in advance and I appreciate your input.

.org.uk is fine for ranking IMO. Just as good as .co.uk for SEO I reckon.

I would favour WordPress over Blogger, don't know about Google Sites. Don't use Blogger because if you add multiple aff links you can get suspended and it's a nightmare getting it back.

Even better, learn to build your sites from scratch with Dreamweaver.

Good news about the .org.uk

I guess I do need to learn how to do more in terms of building sites, I have heard of dreamweaver but bit weary if it's any harder than blogger; mind you blogger has been down all day!

If I build a site on dreamweaver or wordpress am I right in thinking I would then need to pay for hosting? I have seen webpages as part of domain name registration so maybe that will be an option. I have taken a look at wordpress but there seems to be two .org and .com; more investigation.

I suppose there is no rush at the moment given it is only my 5th day in the business

Thanks again

If you are on an extremely tight budget, you can try Blogger to start with, as it's totally free. I have used it:

http://navito.blogspot.com/

but will NEVER put more than one link in a post, otherwise you might get suspended.

Wordpress might have a free hosted option, not sure. If you can find it, I would use that over Blogger.

If you build your own sites, you need to learn full webdesign, which is harder, but worth it if you're serious about this. Hosting will be needed but it's not that expensive to get started.

Thanks accelerator.

I have been investigating Blogger and can see that wordpress type themes can be loaded. That said I do like the wordpress tools so guess I will invest in hosting, I will do my homework first.

Once again thank you for your advice.

Free wordpress (wordpress.com) is much stricter about affiliate links and advertising than blogger / blogspot (blogger.com).

Thanks peacock,

I have been investigating wordpress and I can see that the free blog probably isn't suitable for monetization. I read through the download and set up instructions for wordpress.org and frankly for a newbie like me it was scary.

I am trawling through as much information as I can in terms of hosting wordpress, how it's done and can I do it? I have sort of decided in my head that I will use Blogger for minisites that concentrate on Adsense then figure wordpress.org out for affiliate activities.

I have pretty advanced plans on what I want the minisites to do but just need to figure out how to do it. I know I can buy this help in or even use a host package but for the long term I think it's important that I learn how to create my own sites.

Maybe you could answer me this question:

A number of hosting sites state they have 1 click intergration for wordpress but does this mean that I still need to do all the file and server set up business or will they do that for me. I am sorry that wasn't a well explained question but I am a while of being able to speak the lingo.

Thanks in advance of any replies.

If it is "fantastico" or "softalicious" it is a genuine one click install (well more like 3 clicks and a bit of typing, but it is in a "wizard" format).... no FTP required

Likewise once you have done that, uploading themes and plugins can all be done with a couple of clicks from inside the wordpress dashboard.
