![]() | Transfer question
Hi, Just a quick question....I've just noticed in my 123-Reg control panel that there's an option for "internal transfers" of domain names which appears to suggest that any domain (whether .co.uk or .com) can be transferred to any other 123-Reg account holder in what appears to be one simple step......Is this correct? If so, don't other registrars do this and why do people constantly refer to 'buyer paying nom fees' when selling domains here? Presumably if this is correct then it would be easier for a buyer to simply set up an account with the same registrar and get a free transfer rather than paying £12 to Nominet. Am I missing something? |

The Nominet transfer process will update the legal registrant of the domain, this can only be updated via Nominet, all other elements of the domain record can be updated via your registrar. You can move the domain about (either within a registrar system of from registrar to registrar), but technically it is not yours until the registrant has been updated to your name.

Transferring form 1 registrar account to another won't change the who-is details, you need to do it through Nominet for UK domains.

Transferring a TLD such as .com is free, I have never had to pay as both seller and buyer.

Useful thread for me, as a newbie.....hoping to sell on some names - sometime !!!! maybe I have not spotted it yet but is there an idiots guide to the selling process, both for when the sale is within the same registrar, or across different ones. I am particularly keen to understand the sequence of events, and timing, and also how best to handle the paymen process. Thanks John |

Other domains depend on domain policy, the major ones such as .com can often just be shifted to another account on the same registrar for free. Payment is personal preference, generally, you will use trust for a small value exchange and use PayPal / Nochex / bank transfer to complete the transaction, if you sell via a broker, they will have a process to follow, alternatively if you consider the value to be too high to leave to trust you can use an Escrow service (admin has a service - see the link in the header)

It's good to know all this kind of stuff and very easy to see how it can be confusing for people.... I've just been looking on Ebay and in about 10 listings I opened not a single one mentioned anything about transfer fees or Nominet. 3 or 4 mentioned free transfer via 123/ 1 & 1 which is obviously inappropriate if you are selling a domain. You'd think Ebay would know the policy for this and insist people use it correctly! |
