How to get the best price for a domain?

When trying to sell a domain, what is the best way to makes sure you get the best price from interested parties.

Do you offer a BIN price, do you ask for offers or do you somehow hold an auction?

Do you think starting a DomainLore auction and directing potential buyers to the auction would be an effective way of selling a domain?

If you ask for offers, do you set a minimum offer, and how do you encourage interested parties to offer high?

Horses for courses I'm afraid.

I have found an effective way of getting what I consider to be a decent price for a domain name is:-
1) Set up a for sale page with a fixed price on it
2) Direct the domain name to the sales page
3) Wait for an end user buyer to come along

The downside is that unless the domain name in question is extraordinarily commercially valuable, you're not going to get a high volume of inquiries on any one name, so you have to instead go "wide" (lots and lots of generics, each with their own sales pages) in order to ensure a steady stream of sales.

Surely you don't JUST rely on people finding your domains though? Don't you send e-mails/letters to possible buyers?

If you do, do you then simply direct them to your sales page for that domain?

Actually, we DO just rely on buyers finding our domains at present. Makes the whole process as close to hands-free as it's possible to get... That's why I said that it's so important to have the numbers on your side, as you're not going to get sufficient transaction volume out of owning a handful of names.

Unfortunately as Edwin says it is often the best way to get the best price, simply have a nice landing page that says "this domain maybe for sale".

You can sell a name quicker by going to find an end users, but you don't normally get the best price for doing so.

There will be the odd exception but that's what I have found to be the norm.

Actually, have a landing page with "This domain is for sale for £price" - you'll get more enquiries and close more sales that way than by keeping people guessing. Yes, you'll pass up the occasional jackpot by not "sizing the buyer up first" but by having visible, fixed prices you'll get a LOT more interest in general. I know, I've tried it both ways.

If you wanted to contact an end user to tell them you have a domain for sale, which im doing for the first time, how do you go about finding who to send email to and finding the email address, as just going to there website and using there contact use, which is either sales@ or info doesnt seem the best way to contact who you need to speak to

Is it just the 1 domain you're looking at marketing? If it is, you may find some joy from actively promoting your domain.

The landing page is a great idea but if you want to sell quickly, I'd also think about contacting potential end users to alert them to the existence of your domain. Edwin has thousands of names for sale and offers probably trickle through at a nice rate but that's not as likely to happen quickly for a solitary domain.

Feel free to drop me a PM with what you're trying to do & I'll put in my (free) 2p worth!

Billy
