92 & 99 drop date rule?

Even though ive backordered a few domains over the years I dont really know why this 92 & 99 days to drop exists.

Could anyone explain the reasons behind these numbers but mainly which number should be used and for what reason. Most drop 99 days after renewal date and detagged drop 92 days. I know there are exceptions but dont know what that would be.

Pre Nominet names normaly drop on the first date and normal registrations drop on the last date. You can tell which it is by looking at the whois

foz is on a distinguished road

Is "Pre Nominet" before 1998 or 1996?

Thanks.

As far as I know pre-nom drops are now treated like every other drop, could be wrong tho!

Thank you for the link Grant but searching didnt give the reasons why 92 and 99 days have been picked. 30 days for suspend, 62 & 69 days to hold your thumb up your #### while waiting?

Also almost everywhere say "typically" 92 or 99 which implies this isnt always the case.

I borrowed this from an old post as it seems to have vanished from Noms site:

Quote:
“If a renewal fee has still not been received seven days after the expiry date then we will send you a pro forma invoice for the renewal fee by email and post using the contact details held on the register. An example of the email invoice can be found here.

If the renewal fee is not received within the specified credit terms (30 days from the date of the invoice) the domain will be suspended for 60 days. This means that the domain name and all associated services will stop working. After the 60 day suspension period the domain name will be cancelled and will then be available for re-registration by someone else. At any point during the suspension of the domain name you or your registration agent can renew the domain name.”
The initial seven days is ignored if the domain is detagged or reg'd directly with Nominet.
