Confiscations of generic domain names

Despite concerns InternetNZ went ahead regardless and copied Nominet's DRS policy.

Registrars not allowed to register and hold generic domain names
InternetNZ's Domain Name Commissioner Debbie Monahan cancelled 350 domain names registered to Auckland-based Go Kiwi Internet because, she said, the company was unfairly exploiting its position to speculate on them.
While individuals and companies are allowed to register and hold a generic domain name in the hope of one day selling it, registrars are not because they have inside information, such as which names are available, and when, said Monahan.
InternetNZ the New Zealand registry copied Nominet's DRS regardless despite concerns.

Nominet now proposes to reclassify tagholders as registrars under "Raising Industry Standards".

Birds of a feather..... Nominet to copy InternetNZ policy re registrars ?

The only link between these two issues is the word 'registrar', nothing else. No we do not plan to go around taking names off tag holders because they are generics. Individual cases may go through the DRS, but for every generic transferred you will find many more that are not.

This is very assuring that you 'do not plan to'.

Almost as assuring as the 'do not plan to' increase prices?
"We cannot promise that we would never, ever, increase prices because that would be unwise - but we do not plan to."

How very New Nominet.

This is just underhand mischief making. No matter how I write it you could always wilfully misinterpret it, but I'll have a go anyway.

We have clearly established through our policies and procedures that registering generics is not abuse per se, nor is trading in domain names. If certain generics resemble trademarks or other rights and are registered or used in a way that infringe those rights then they may be susceptible to a DRS complaint.

So we have absolutely no plans to take them away, nor do we have plans to make such plans, nor have we ever discussed the idea, nor (to the best of my knowledge) has any member ever tried to get this adopted as policy.

I hope you haven't joined AD just to sling mud because this forum has much more to offer.
