Very good point, so how does Overture gather its stats?
I've never researched that, is it purely type ins on their search results database?

I know Alexa for example, uses code in its Toolbar to gather the information on what people are looking at (hence their traffic stats site is only a reflection of the percentage of the whole internet users who have their toolbar installed) - this is also why Spyware Scanners see it as spyware as its gathering information in the background.
