Ive never bothered looking into the .COM / NET / ORG market until now so would liek your help. Ive looked around verisign but cant find a link to somethign like WHOIS2.

Im signed up for WHOIS2 for sites ive got that offer UK WHOIS lookup but what or how do I get a simular servece for .COM .NET .ORG and .INFO domains? and is it free?

    Regards,

I'm not quite sure what you're after but when doing lookups for .com etc I use the WHOIS provided by:

    http://www.internic.com/whois.html

Using other commercial services can be risky because people may be watching (and in a few cases registering) what you are looking up.

Im wanting access or whatever is needed to run my own whois site for com, net, etc. as ive already got UK's covered on a few of my sites in my sig vie whois2. Im guessing there is something for the other hlq's but I just dont know about them and searching is just listing all the million whois sites.

    If you use (Linux):

    whois -h rs.internic.net example.com

You will never get blocked. That will give you all the basic whois information you need about a domain name, and you can parse it for the domain's authoritative whois server to then go and get the registrant details. In the case of example.com, you will see that this is:

    whois.iana.org

    So you can then do:

    whois -h whois.iana.org example.com

That gives you the registrant info.

thanks I was trying to keep away from shell execs but as sooo many people have replied im guessing this wasnt such a dumb question after all.

As Nominet offer (whois2) a path which allows whois websites im shocked others on here couldnt help with an equivalent for .com / net etc domain lookup. I hate page scraping other sites but for now this is the fastest route I know.

A shell exec is a lot easier to code and manage than scraping and parsing other sites. It's also a lot faster! Also look here: http://www.phpwhois.org/
