Link Building - Advice please!

Hi there

The best quotes from the best companies on the web... Getquotes.co.uk is coming along, a number of pages have keywords etc sorted (home page Keywords SEO not started yet)

I want to start link building so does anyone have

a. any advice on link building
(stuff like - should the link always link to my index page or to particular pages in the website? etc)

b. Any advice on where to get links place links, from a quick look it appears there are a zillion sites offering links, is there a core group of essential link sites?

c. Any SEO advice at all?!!!!!!

Cheers

Matt

1. Get links to as many internal pages as you can, I would say 30-50% home page and 50-70% internal pages.
2. Get links form sites that have a similar theme to the page they are linking to.
3. Try and get as many one way links as possible, Reciprocal links are OK but if the % of reciprocal vs one way is too high you will suffer
4. Vary your link text A LOT.
5. Try to get links from pages with no other external links on, or as few as possible.
6. Forget links from pages with 20-30+ external links on
7. Try to get links from older sites.
8. Try to get a link in the middle of the page copy which is highly related to the link text and your site's content.
9. Look for links from pages that have a title tag that is related to your link text and your site's content
10. DON'T BUILD LINKS TOO FAST.

I'm sure there's lots more but that should get you started.

Two other things.

11. Try to get a link on the page from a site that scores high for the search term you want to score well for. This is the hardest one to get but will give you the biggest boost.
12. To make link building easier build a site that people like and want to come back to. Give people great content and you will get links without even asking.

Some good advice there Paul.

Some different methods of building links include:

Directory Submissions
Link Exchanges
Purchasing links
Blog posts
Link baiting / Natural linking
Signature links

A variety of these methods can work really well, one important thing to remember, especially if your targeting a very competetive keyword is time. Its taken me nearly a year to crack the top ten for a very competetive keyword, i was almost giving up and then from nowhere i'm suddenly ranking no.8.
