back link question

I was wondering if you have a site e.g. www.123,com that high on SE's and someone wants a link from that site to their site (say www.wanky,com), and I give them a link of the form:

www.someOtherSite,com from www.123,com, which then redirects a user to www.wanky,com site - do SEs count this as a quality back link as its not actually a direct link from my site thus giving them link but not enhancing wanky, com's link popularity?

hope that makes sense

thanks

I guess it depends how the redirection is done. If the redirection can't be recognised by the search engine or is hidden from it, then the final destination site can't benefit from the back link.

Just add rel='nofollow' - this will still be a valid link for users etc, but google etc won't pass any pagerank etc etc

Why are you giving them the link

If their site is not good enough to link to don't do it. If it is pass link normally.

If people want to pay me good money for a link from my site to get traffic thats good - however I don't want their site to benefit from having a quality backlink next time its indexed

or am i just being mean?

You're just being mean

If a search engine thinks a link is good it will give it full weighting if not it won't

It is not your job as a site owner to decide how a search engine should do its job (much as you may like to at times)

I cant decide how a search engine does its job - but I can make a dam good guess!

THe fact must be if you give away direct links to lesser sites with little or no decent back links or decent PR then logic would suggest if the same site gets a few other decent links you suddenly have comptetion a few months down the line - or am I just worring too much about this?

or

In my opinion it depends on what the person is buying the link for - Traffic ? to have a quality backlink from another site ? to try and increase his websites own PR ? to increase his serps rankings ?

If you are selling a link from your site to their site, then that is really what you should be giving the buyer - a straight link from site a to b.

SE's will not count this as a backlink from your domain A. (your site you sold a link from) if it diverts to domain X. (the redirect site) and then to domain B. (the customers site)

The Decision is yours though

Munders is on a distinguished road

I take it that that would work the same if you are placing back links on your own sites. I have about 5 sites, each one getting no visits. If i put links on each site linking my other sites, i take it that would help my search rankings. OR.... as none of my sites are on the first 10- 20 pages of google would this not help at all
