first you see it, then you dont

Hi
can anyone who knows look at this site and tell me why i was first page in google for "actonhotels" for a while and now are no where to be seen?

Actonhotels.co.uk - Deals & Discounts for Hotel Reservations from Luxury Hotels to Budget Accommodations

My thoughts were that cross linking killed it off - seems ok in the other engines.

Any advice appreciated

Dupe content?

Random sentance from the text on fronpage gives: "On Churchfield Road, which runs north of and parallel to the High Street, is a range of pubs and restaurants, from the Churchfield" - Google Search

Yep i'd say so big mistake copying or if you copy not even mixing it up.

On that note I posted 2 requests to Julian's content writing site but have heard nothing for 3-5 days now.

Is he away as I needed them last week really?

how does google know that this text is not from the same source as say the text from the hotel descriptions distributed by the the hotel chains?

yeah I knew it might not be a great idea but when you have 90 to do :S - suppose i better get back to writing something original! (and it will be with my spelling!)

Google is smarter than we can think. It can deindex a page if it can detect that the content of a website is copied from another source. Just keep link building and use original content. You can check the authenticity of a content in the quote finder as well.

Short to medium term I like to rewrite wikipedia content. Once you've done that, test your page on copyscape.com and it should not flag up as duplicate content. If it passes the Copyscape test you're good to go. Copy/pasting wiki content in full is a surefire way to never rank for anything at all.

Then as you get time, or the site starts making money or getting traffic, you can replace the wiki rewrites with truely unique, high quality content.

In addition to the issue of duplicate content mentionned above, a few seo tips:

1 rewrite the title tag with keywords (Acton hotels) rather than part of the url
2 Use h1-h6 heading tags and "sprinkle" keywords in some of them in a natural way- especially the top ones
3 Use alt text for pictures and menu options and "sprinkle" keywords through them in a natural way
4 Consider using keywords in the picture names and filenames
5 It's probably too late to do so now, but I would have put keywords into the urls - eg for "Acton Hotels" I would have called it "acton-hotels.aspx" rather than "listings.aspx"
Also, try running your site through one of the keyword density checks you can find on google and make sure your site isn't tripping some keyword spam filter.
