If you haven't heard about it yet Googles next big update is called Caffeine, it looks like it is going to be a biggie, here is some good info on it:



So far it looks to me (from using the 2nd link) they are putting even more weight on 'authority' websites as they started doing in the last update. So for microsites this could prove a bit of a killer

But having said that some of my mature websites look like they may take a bit of a battering as well (even though they are well estbalished, plenty of backlinks etc) but others look like they will improve in the SERPS, despite the fact they are of similar age, and I use all the same SEO methods etc.

This update hasn't been rolled out yet so obviously I don't want to draw any conclusions, as I presume they are still working on it so these results will continue to change.

Essentially I think the fundamentals of ranking highly will stay the same (IE good content and quality inbounds wins out) but taking on the authority sites which have been around for many years will prove even more of a challenge!

Will have to wait and see though until Google have properly rolled out the changes and the 'webmaster blogs' have got their claws into it .

Just had another thought: the 2nd link in the list is G .com, so the results won't be specific to those of us in the UK, which will be obviously be effecting the results compared to when you search in the current Google. So ok to compare global websites in the new update but perhaps not .co.uk's where we highly target UK.

I did try changing it to .co.uk but it loads an error.

Must admit I didn't notice anything on my .co.uk's. A bit on the US. A site that had gone to about 300 back in the top 10.

Yes that is a really cool tool actually, makes it easy to compare. From the Matt Cutts video (YouTube - Matt Cutts legt de Google Caffeine Update uit) it sounds like a big update so hopefully it genuninely improves G a lot (from both our point of view and general users)

Caffeine has nothing to do with brands; you're thinking of the Vince update. Caffeine is an infrastructure update and not an algorithm update. In fact, Google's Matt Cutts has explicitly said that they're trying to get the results in Caffeine as similar as possible to the pre-caffeine SERPs.

obviously it is an infrastructure change update from Google but do you expect that Google is solely changing its infrastructure and not making any changes in its algo. If this is so, why we are experiencing some changes ( negligible may)
in the serp.

No I'm not, as I said in my original post:

From the tests I've run there are clear differences in the serps. It may be true G are hoping to keep the serps the same but the changes they are making appear to be having a notable effect on the serps, not just the odd link moving but plenty of changes (albeit it one or two places up/down not dramatic swings).

But until the update is complete I'm still not going to draw any conclusions.
