when is a link not a back link ?!?!?!?

Basically , if i for eg:-

www.homepage12345.co.uk (fictional site)

is that a backlink ?!?!?

or would it need to be :-

http://www.homepage12345.co.uk ?

or the more stealthy type version :-

<a href="http://www.homepage12345.co.uk/" target="_blank">homepage 12345</a>

or would all be acceptable ?

It's a link if it's wrapped with an a href HTML tag.

As shown above, all three count as backlinks. If it's a plain text link and not a hyperlink e.g. homepage12345.co.uk then it wouldn't count.

However, the top 2 you listed don't have anchor text, so they are less valuable than the third link.

Also, you need to make sure that you determine which URL is your primary URL - so if you want http://www.homepage12345.co.uk as your main address, you need to make sure http://homepage12345.co.uk/ and http://www.homepage12345.co.uk and http://www.homepagr12345.co.uk/ (and so on) all direct to http://www.homepage12345.co.uk

blossom thank you again for your help.....i have set google to make sure the www. and none www are set in google tools so they are not seen as duplicate content...

peter , could you give me a example please of "It's a link if it's wrapped with an a href HTML tag. "

i'm such a newbie , so anchor text is the part that would show as a clickable link.

based on my example of :-

www.homepage12345.co.uk , could you create me a quick example of the perfect valuable example , just so i can be more effective in my link building in future.

Make sure you vary your anchor text for each link to make your links look "natural" rather than artificially generated by one person; for the same reason get a mix of dofollow and nofollow and a few plain urls and "click here" type of links.

would it be okay in seo terms to put a whole phrase in the anchor text or just a couple words.

It doesn't really matter, but a phrase probably won't add as much value as a couple of targeted keywords would. As others have mentioned, if you keep the backlink profile varied you will find that you should have a mixture of anchor text types (including keywords, whole phrases, full URLs, click heres etc).
