SEO Link building question

Hi Guys,

We are in the middle of putting the final touches together of a project... so just need to borrow some knowledge from you seo guys nif I can.

When looking at buying links etc, what types of variables are you looking for to judge value of the other site?

Google PR,
Indexed pages
Inbound links.....

These are a few of what we have already, is there anything you would want to know about them....

Cheers
Graeme

Age of the site and number of outbound links on offer on any given page would be important factors for me mate

Theme or topic of outbounds on the page is also worth considering - if a car site is linking out to hardware sites / casino sites etc - links may be less valuable in comparison to sites linking on-topic

Cheers guys, will add those to the list.

Would it matter if the content you put on a third parties site is linked to from the homepage of that site.

So you pay to put some content on a back page, would you want that back page linking to from the homepage?

You're going to want to make sure it at least is linked somewhere. You wouldn't want a page hidden on a domain, as it won't gain any of the value from the site... not to mention the fact it just looks unnatural.

To add to the suggested metrics, I tend to look at mozRank over PR these days as it tends to provide a more reliable/up to date metric. I will usually ignore anything under a mozRank of 4.00. It's also worth looking to see where the site ranks for the keywords they target, as this offers a reasonable idea as to how relevant/valuable Google considers it.

- Google PR. MozRank.

- Number of links on the page (you want less than 100. If there's a huge list of paid links, avoid).

- Always check the number of backlinks via opensiteexplorer.org - there are many who fake PR and SEOmoz scores seen via plugins. Don't trust anything over PR7 to be real.

- Look when the last post was and how frequently they post - if it was several months ago with one post every couple of months, don't bother.

- A lot of people think footer links and sidebar links look more spammy - they are actually great for having a large number of links from a quality site. Opt for those instead of a couple of links from inner pages where you can.

- If you're going for inner pages, choose established ones that already have PR and MozRank.

- Find some of the other external links on the page and run them through a backlink checker that assesses quality, like Open Site Explorer. If the site you want to get a link from doesn't come up on the first couple of pages, it might not to be worth the money.

Cheers Peter and Blossom, some great points there that I never thought of.

What I am trying to do is build the marketplace for these types of link / page space trading. But where the buyers have enough information to decide if they want to put a their content on the other website without knowing the url.

Obviously got to keep it out of the way of Google from looking in, so some of it is going to be manually done.

Take a look at http://www.linksowner.com/ they do it reasonably well. Though I still personally like to see the sites myself before making a decision. One of the biggest gripes I have with not being able to see the URL is loads of people these days are throwing up sites on domains that used to be something else (e.g. http://www.2liu.com is now a slots site, but the links have nothing to do with slots. It's hard to automatically check for relevance).

Doing this will give you xxxx amount of links very quickly all with the same anchor text though. Which for many sites, depending on the diversity of their link profile, could trigger an anchor text filter for that keyword.

Hi Peter,

I'll knock together a pm for you or what we were thinking of, there is an opportunity for people to see the url's before the links go life but only after a certain point, so you will get chance to cancel. However we are trying to work a balance between people getting to see as much as possible and google seeing very little as to nullify the worth the content being on the other site.

Cheers
Graeme

Yes, true. I'd never recommend buying links for anything other than established sites with a fair number of backlinks already - should have clarified that, thanks.

A feedback system would be quite nice to integrate in there, with a vague indication of how many links have been sold - 'X of Y links available' and different slots. Don't know if you've looked at it, but buysellads.com would give you some good ideas.
