No problem mate, it's www.barnsleynews.co.uk

The site still isn't finished yet and if being honest I still don't 100% know how all this facebook stuff works but my partner on it is pretty good.

Bits I have configured are the comments system. People leave comments on an article and it goes on my site and there facebook page. So a bit of a double benefits to comments.

Secondly they can log in and register on my site with their facebook account. So they don't need to go in and register again for my site.

There are loads of other features I am looking to bring in shortly once I fully understand them but aim now is to tidy the site design up and get it fully launched next week.

If that was ever to work to its full potential, people would have to build everything within Facebook or Facebook apps - which admittedly is happening on a small scale at the moment, but isn't feasible on a large scale until Facebook drastically overhauls the terrible developer tools, capabilities and interface.
I was refering to the bigger picture really. (Facebook vs Google's search)
Facebooks developer tools are actually very good - Its quite scary what they can do. The only thing holding them back at the moment is some privacy issues.

Yes your right of course Google holds alot more info about sites.
I just believe the focus will be on social search results in the future and thats where Facebook has the potential to leapfrog Google.

Yes but Facebook is king of social data

I agree!

@Blossom Out of interest, what cross-section of sites are you referrring to where social information would be irrelevant?

Facebook buying Bing? I can't see it happening. It's not like Microsoft need the money and as someone has already said, they've invested a huge amount of money in it. There is already a partnership between the two as the check in service uses Bing Maps. I can see there being some sort of search service added to Facebook, people probably spend just as much time on Facebook as they do Google but if that happens, it's still search and it'll still be easy enough to game and therefore SEO won't die.

Google is trying its best to kill SEO. See most of the recent posts on SEOBook for how and why. I don't think it will ever stop being important however, it's just adapting.

Getting the basic on page optimisation is still going to matter. There's the argument that this should be done by developers but it doesn't wash as it rarely is. The long tail will always be important and this is reliant on good SEO, both on page and strategy.

Often chasing really competitive search terms can be futile and requires a large budget but there's a reason that these terms are competitive, because they drive a huge amount of traffic. The only way to tap in to this traffic is to spend on Adwords or do SEO and the former is likely to be more costly in the long run.

SEO is still just one part of the online mix. Yes, social may be getting you 400 visits a day but if you did SEO and Social, you'd be getting more. In the case of a news site, you're almost exclusively relying on the long tail. There are only a few terms that would likely need link building work. The rest of it is a case of making sure your page titles match what people are likely to be searching for, which I don't think they do. Getting yourself in to the Google News service would also get you some healthy traffic and the title is an important part of that.

Every site is different, a news site lends itself well to Social traffic. If you're a plumber, then SEO is likely to drive you a lot more traffic than social. Just because you're not getting much traffic from SEO, doesn't mean it's not important
