This is about as off topic as it gets, but how long should you hard boil an egg for? And how long to boil an egg?

    Thanks for a quick reply!

[This is not a joke, I genuinely need to know. I would look on Google but i don't trust it as someone's probably SEOd the phrase for something else]

    2 mins for soft
    4 mins for hard

Or when the water evaporates of the shell when you lift it out of the water
    (I always use that one)

Depends if the egg is straight out of the fridge or at room temperature. I do from fridge for 5 minutes straight into boiling water with a pin hole at flatter end of egg to prevent cracking... nippers seem happy.

FYI it also depends on the altitude at which you are cooking it.

    http://newton.ex.ac.uk/teaching/CDHW/egg/

Water boils at a lower temperature at higher altitude so you need to cook it longer.

I think 2 minutes is not long enough - the white is still a bit lubbery.
    3 minutes for soft
    5 minutes for hard!

    What have I started here??

To be fair, I hadn't even considered the wider issues... Altitude is a bit too much, but I agree that the cooking time will be affected by whether the egg has been kept in the fridge.

It's a whole new question though - should you keep eggs in the fridge? Does it increase the lifespan? Don't answer that.

Thanks again for the replies. Might even register the domains...
