Do people still use directory sites as part of their link building?

If yes what criteria do you look for?

Also how much would you pay to be listed in a directory, I know this may depend on a few factors?

Thanks
Gary

It's worth paying a little for a small number of directories with very high domain authority.

Thanks I think directory links are a good base to start any SEO campaign. It's good to vary your link building.

I tend to look for a mixture of generic directories and niche directories. If generic it has to have a relevant category.

The cost of the link for me will depend on the authority of the page where my site will be listed.

Would appreciate any more feedback

Thanks
Gary

I look for local directories or niche directories. Personally, I avoid paying for them but I know some companies (who do well in the serps) do. If the directory comes above your site in the SERPS (and so you could get traffic as well as backlinks) then I might be more likely to pay.

I also go for high-quality directories like dmoz (if accepted) or Aboutus.

I avoid the companies offering 1000 automated directories for £x and 2000 social bookmarks for £y as I think those sort of backlinks look spammy.

Agreed. AboutUs is the best directory out there in my opinion. The dofollow links are very powerful.

I would only pay if it was a very specialist niche directory or if the directory had a decent PR AND my link would be on its PR Page.

I wouldn't pay any substantial amount for a listing unless it was a specialist directory where I would likely be receiving direct traffic.

I use best of the web, yahoo directory, and any good quality local or otherwise relevant directory.

I don't bother with your typical everything-under-one-URL copycat directory - they are full of muck and would the URL even get crawled, and even then would it get any linkjuice??
