    Shocking: http://moo.mu/U

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Strange such a freak thing like this should happen after the Surtees tragedy last week.

I think people forget how dangerous motorsport can be when it goes wrong. F1 is a safe sport generally.

I was quite amazed that it has been something like 15 years since the last death in F1. With the speeds they are doing and the lack of complete protection, it's an incredible record.

Will we see F1 drivers enclosed by a proper screen and/or roof in future?

Probably not mate, the biggest concern is the tyres flying around and can't build a screen against that, even saloon cars can't protect you from them.

The flying spring is a one in a billion, not see that again as long as we live.

    Just bad luck unfortunately.

Although that does not include marshals. One was killed at the Italian Grand Prix in 2000:

and another at the Australian Grand Prix in 2001:

Let's hope Massa makes a good recovery, but these kind of accidents go with the territory unfortunately.

Maybe it will come to an enclosed cockpit with Boeing 747 screen glass - would that work? Won't do much for aerodynamics, but there are clever designers in F1.

An interesting idea but then the car just becomes like other classes, and I expect there would be driver overheating issues, plus fire safety considerations.

I'm not saying I support the idea of encapsulating the drivers in some form of pod, but in these times of Health and Safety, you know it's going to be something that's going to be considered!

Was just a freak accident, 1 in a million.

Pods or glass covers wont happen because if there is a fire or if the mechanism fails to work then the driver is in much more trouble.

Nothing is damage proof, especially when it hits your head at a combined speed of 275 kph.

If he'd been wearing one of the old helmets from not many years ago, he would probably be dead now after that impact it took, the fact that he was wearing a carbon fibre helmet will have done much to limit his injuries to what they are.

By the way, carboncrashhelmets.co.uk - carbonhelmets.co.uk are both available for reg fee, if you can find an affiliate for them, those helmets cost a lot ;) Donation to admin if anyone takes those names, please, cheers.

    [edit]

    Also carbonhelmet.co.uk = 1,000 exact June

Can't believe that happened so soon after this freak F2 tragic accident only 2 weeks ago involving Henry Surtees son of f1 winner John Surtees F2 Brands Hatch

On the subject of very protective helmets, it doesn't matter how strong they are even if indestructable being hit with such force will cause serious internal damage.
