I use a server in the office for development work, but anything production goes on a box in a datacentre.

I run a Dell Poweredge server at home, and the upload speed means anything other than simple sites kills it.

You have to think your server will likely have 100mbps connectivity and the average user is 2-8mbps, where as standard SDSL is 2up/down, so you'll soon be out gunned.

A standard bb like is 128kbps-1mb up, and dies even sooner.

GW, a good dedi can go into a thousand a month easy, so do you NEED better or would you like better ?

Collocating currently at Iomart Group PLC (Nottingham). I will be moving my server further north next year, as my server is unmanaged and driving to notts is a pain in the arse from here.

    Quad Core X3353
    4 GB Memory
    1TB Disc Space (2x 500GB)
    Raid 1
    100mbit up

    2U Collocation
    .8 Amps
    3000GB/Mo Transfer

I also have test/backup servers at home in my cabinet.

Currently using ehosting.co.uk for my personal site, I’ve been very satisfied with the speed/uptime so far. Finally, I’m using Rackspace for my e-mail hosting, though I will be ending my contract and moving to gmail.

I have couple of VPS - two at urgentvps.com - very cheap and reliable (servers in Frankfurt am Main) - well recommended (3 IP's as standard) and also one VPS at hwshosting.net - also good and cheap - costs me £4 per month - servers in Maidenhead ;) In addition I have 3 reseller accounts at various companies (1 UK based, 2 in USA).

You might find renting a quad core dedicated from a provider much more preferable these days. You can get a box from Rapidswitch, Poundhost, UK2 that will be fine for most things for ~£50 per month these days. It means you don't have to worry about hardware and depreciation and driving to the DC to fix your stuff etc... co-lo is great if you have specialised hardware requirements, but otherwise it can be a lot more hassle that it's worth.

I use a reseller account with xilo. Been with them about 5 years. Chose them because at the time they were cheapest for the size package i wanted. Have upgraded a couple of times - no reason to move. Never had any issues. They use installatron.

Fasthosts on the other hand... I do a bit of freelance work for a local computer company and they use fashosts for their clients. Fasthosts does my head in!

I used to use daily.co.uk on their reseller package - about £250 per year for unlimited sites, but then ended up with loads of problems all at once - servers hacked, sites not working, etc. I just use them for simple static html sites now.

Everything else is on the rackspace cloud - about £80 per month but excellent, and unlimited sites again. If you go over your "compute cycles" then you pay for what you use, but you get loads in that £80 package.

I just signed up to Amazon WS - the EC2 virtuals are very cool indeed. You can choose from a huge variety of pre-compiled images and it's all PAYG.

I have a dedicated server with Rapid Switch, very good support and good reliability. I'd stay well clear of Heart internet, i have also heard of recent reliability issues with fast hosts new cloud infrastructure
