Magento is pretty resource hungry, so you'll need a VPS at least to run it + it's quite a steep learning curve.

Prestashop seems 'okay' - but it is very limited when it comes to product variations.

Opencart gets a lot of good reviews - but I personally found it restrictive when looking for themes / designs.

I've recently been working with woocommerce - which is a free wordpress plug in. You are limited to woocommerce compatible themes when using it - but there are plenty of nice responsive ones on themeforest etc. No issues to report as yet.

I guess it really depends on the size of your store / amount of products & variations you plan to have.

I use Magento and it's great but as said its very resource heavy so you need special hosting which will cost you more.

I use opencart which I'm happy with. It's a custom design so can't comment on themes though

zen cart for me. I love it. Super short learning span. Loads of templates out there.

    Great back end.

Integrates immediately with paypal and a few others straight out of the box. You can refund/part refund paypal transactions within the admin control panel.

    Thanks

Thanks very much for all your input, it is much appreciated.

I'm going to look at what is required again for the new website and compare it best I can to the many suggestions provided.
