Exactly what I was thinking to be honest.

Maybe in 10 years google could sort out spammy sites though? *cough*payday loans*cough*

They will sort that out by just making the first page all adwords

I think you always have to at least double the timeframe on these sorts of predictions, but within 20 years it's not impossible to imagine some kind of brain-computer interface (already exists in very, *very* rudimentary form to help paralysed people)

Technological breakthroughs are happening faster and faster. It may not be obvious if you look at "mainstream" developments, but if you keep an eye on the cutting edge of technologies such as graphene, solar, genetics, quantum computing, etc. etc. progress is being announced practically on a weekly basis that is moving these disciplines on in leaps and bounds.

I bet behind closed doors governments have all sorts of crazy shizbit technology wise that people don't know about yet.

^ For example, watch from 38 minutes, hearing voices by signal.. ahh.

    Nice :p

I've heard it speculated that humans are just an evolutionary stepping block to artificial intelligence and that "that"or "they" are the real future..

Scary thought, kind of seems headed that way though.

I will never use google glasses.

That's assuming humans are not already artificial intelligence.

If you're interested in that sort of thing, you'll want to read up about the "singularity" - that's what some people have dubbed the moment at which the acceleration of improvement in AI capacity (imagine greater-than-human AI with the inherent capacity to design greater-than-themselves future AI, then iterate that scenario) is so happening so fast that literally "anything becomes possible" and speculation therefore becomes meaningless.

In other words, it's impossible to discuss what lies on the other side of the singularity, because machines thousands, millions or billions of times smarter than us will have invented...? We quite literally can't imagine what comes after the "..." because we don't even begin to have the intellectual capacity to do so.

BTW, I don't see any inherent flaw in the logic. There's no guarantee we'll ever achieve AI hyperintelligence, but there's nothing stopping us from getting there either. Moore's Law plus time should see to that.

The exponential growth graph tells the story nicely, though really the growth should shoot upwards at faster than exponential rates as soon as you get supersmart AI designing the next computer generations instead of us dumb fleshbags...

    Very interesting stuff, thanks Edwin/Foz.

This topic really leads me on to thinking about what the near future of humanity will be like.. but I think I will keep those thoughts to myself for now because some might view them as a bit wacky

This is probably my favourite subject and something that's shaped everything for me since 1993 (and precisely why I do the job I do today and just about every other job I've ever had). This is my post about it all http://hellomynameise.com/matt-cutts-and-search-in-10-years-oh-really - funny you mention the singularity and such like Edwin, you're bang on the money.

Interesting discussion....one of my favorites is 'Simulation Theory'. The idea being as soon as us humans create a realistic simulation of reality, we will immediately know we could be in one already...
