I am not a Nominet member - so have no say in what happens to the .uk registry - but I wonder if someone could please clear something up for me?
Clause 9 of the Memorandum is the one that prevents the assets of the company being distributed to members on winding up. It requires that either a body with similar Objects is given the assets - or that they are given to charity.
Clause 3 sets out the Objects - and as it stands they are highly restricted. However Clause 9 seems to lose all its teeth if new Clause 3 is adopted - since those Objects could apply to just about any commercial company.
So at some point create a new shell company, wind up Nominet, drop the registry, cash and all the other assets into Newco - then rename it Nominet and float it.
Am I missing something - or is this not a clear and (fairly obvious) possibility? Also I'm sorry if this has already been discussed and dealt with.
