This seems quite random to be featured on Page 1 on Google for the keyword 'Hosting'

Nothing exciting or worthwhile really but sitting at around position 6 for such a good keyword.

Has around 200 Facebook likes and 50 Google+ 'likes' - the secret of it's success - is G really treading down a slippery path that social plays a bigger part than content and relevancy of search term?

200 Facebook likes and 50 google +1s doesn't seem that much to me though. That site is PR4 though and has a good amount of backlinks.

The domain previously had a site on it dating back to 2001 and it has amassed thousands of inbound links.

Can't see it either...

Clear your browser cache - sign out of google and try again.

You're seeing personalised results.

The impact of social media is far too overrated in terms of SEO. You're not going to see a difference in organic results on page 1 for highly competitive keywords (unless you're logged into your Google account and you're seeing G+ shares and recommendations). That's not to be confused with the personalised results you see if you're logged into your Google account and you don't have a Google+ account, or the personalised results from cookies and caching even when logged out of everything Google.

Just to confirm the site was on page 1 when cc976a says it was.

Obviously Google must read Acorn and saw the error of their ways!

As Mat says, it was there - and I wasn't logged and seeing personalised results (first thing I checked)

Quite often sites come and go in the top ten for results especially if the sites just got a lot of inbound links recently.

the panda 3.3 update just finished, perhaps it showed for a brief period as some signals were turned on or off?
