Pipex buys Caudwell Communications, trading as Homecall, one of the largest residential voice telephony businesses in the UK.

MARKET speculation is growing that predators including BT are circling internet services provider Pipex. Shares in the company rose on the rumour that a takeover was under way and a big shareholder had been bought out. About 30m shares, 1.3% of the company, were sold..........

...........City sources say BskyB, scared of being left behind in internet-based television broadcasting, could be in the frame for Pipex. It is also suggested Pipex could be planning a merger with another internet player, Fasthosts.

If Pipex did buy Fasthosts what would happen to Nominet ?

Maybe BT will save the day ? they own the UK internet anyway !

They own a significant part of the internet access network in the UK (Even the LLU kit is held within BT owned buildings) but to be fair they don't play that significant a roll in the real 'internet' in the UK.

Ok going on the basis that:

Pipex owns spectrum rights for wi-max

Pipex bought Hosteurope (including 123-reg.co.uk)

Both Pipex and Fasthosts voted "No" at the Nominet EGM

A large Pipex shareholder just sold up

Pipex just bought Caudwell Communications (Homecall VOIP)

Then.......

What if Pipex buys Fasthosts - the Nominet number 2 ?

Then.....

What if BT or BskyB bought Pipex ?

They would have control of Nominet and have enough "power" to bid for things like ENUM - not to mention what they could do with wi-max or voip

Suerly if one buys the other, then the memberships would be linked/merged and they would actually get less votes due to the voting cap.

So in answer to your question... not much :p

Bear in mind anything like that is probably going to get referred to MMC so it could take months to complete and may not go through.

Don't Easily and NetNames have seperate votes within Nominet - even though the latter owns the former? Perhaps if the two companies remained as seperate legal entities - but if one owned the other - then they'd get twice the votes still? Anyone from Nominet know the answer to this one?

I have heard they have also bought my old company I used to work for - BusinessServe.co.uk - Legend.co.uk.
