I saw a quote yesterday from the former director general of the CBI.

"we have developed into a "Gimme" society stuffed full of rights without an
    understanding of responsibility"

    This is a phenomenal statement.

I agree, but it also applies to the rich as well as the poor. I wouldn't like we are seperating the two. The politician house flipping, or the banker mis-seliing are no better in my mind, then a kid looting a shop. The only difference is that they feel able to talk and look down on someone looting, though they would've done that regardless of the looting anyway.

Of course it goes without saying that this doesn't apply to those commiting more serious crimes over the past few days. The police have been nowhere near tough enough, but it's understandable in a sense, as the public don't seem to be able to make their mind up about what they expect of the them.

well i am sitting here...with my window open overlooking my neighbours drive and there is what i would call a rugby scrum of activity !!!!!

My neighbour is unfortuntely on the brink of losing his life (3 strokes within a couple of month and very poorly)....the Guy has had a great life in his own little way ,he has family but unfortunately they never visited and his love of his life was his dog that passed away a month before he started having his strokes...

I am sitting here listening to the very best of british....they have within 3 hours :

sold his car which is less than 2 years old to the local car dealer (cash) and placed the proceeds in their Van

sold his sofas under his feet...sold to drug dealers for £150 (god only knows what he will sit on)

rang an estate agent to value there new found inheritance....

they all came in vans to empty his house and garage whilst he feels there warmth ,which only loving children can do....

but this story isnt a rare occurance it happens far too regular...he worked most of his life with two jobs to support his family and served his country in the RAF during a time when his country needed him...

    rule brittania...yes rule britannia

    Gimme Society...????

I'd say it was stating the glaringly obvious.

All great quotes state the obvious, it's just that they are delivered in a succinct manner that concentrates the mind.

We all focus on our rights and I would not discourage that, but most of us don't consider our responsibilities to be as important, some don't consider them to be important at all.

It seems to me the more people have the more selfish they become..

..not everyone of course, but it seems people tend to take things for granted - I mean how many pairs of trainers do you need ?

Compared to the third world we're just so lucky, I can never understand why people can be so cruel and selfish to one another, instead of wishing the best for everyone..it's such an ugly thing. A sad society.

Ahh, I feel better with that off my chest...I think I need a lie down and some TLC !

    Marleeeene....:)

Good statement, but he's nicked that from David Cameron - he's looted Camerons speech cupboard ;-)

I heard some stupid female yoof on tv stating about the police, "when they show us respec yeah, we'll respec vem back...". What the feck has she and her chavy mates ever done to earn anyones respect?
They are given* the opportunity of an education which largely they waste; they have no intention of getting a job or bettering themselves or their environment; have scant regard for those in society who are more in need than they are.

At what point in their lives will that change? Never. Unless it is made more worthwhile for them to be productive than stand with their hand out collecting money from those they apparently demand respect from.
One lady on tv who's shop had been recked described them perfectly; 'feral rats'.

*There should be a monetary value placed on a basic education. Maybe if they could see that it was worth x£thousands, they might start to appreciate it. Doubt it but...
