    Hi guys,

    Just wanted to ask some newbie Nominet questions, am I right in thinking...

    - Domain reg/renewals with a TAG through Nominet are £80+VAT, unless you're also a Nominet member (£400+VAT) in which case;
    - Your domain reg/renewals are £5+VAT?

    I've got a TAG, but wondered if Nominet membership will be worth it for me, have around 100 .uk domains, although always nervous having all my names with 123-Reg as seen some horror stories.

    Sorry for the newb questions!
    Thanks, Greg

    Yes, if you're a member and a registrar then your renewals will be £5+VAT each.

    Note also that the membership fee is £100+VAT per year aside from the one-off joining fee. In practice that means that if you had 100 domains exactly, they would end up costing you £6+VAT each as you'd have £1+VAT per domain in membership charges to amortise. Of course, if you had more domains the overhead per domain drops accordingly.

    Wouldn't that be £5+£2+VAT? £5 for two years registration, during that time you'll need two times membership.

    EDIT: My bad, I presume Edwin meant year one cost.

    Yes, I did, but you're right that there are 2 lots of membership dues for 2 years' worth of regs.

    For me since signing up for membership it's just a lot easier to manage domains - all in one central control panel and don't have to rely on third parties for DNS changes etc you can do it all instantly along with all your billing and renewals etc.

    Nominet membership is not just about the costs, the benefits of having complete control over your portfolio and not having to rely on a 3rd party registrar can save you a lot of grief.

    Thanks for the info guys, and yes I'm looking at membership for those reasons, just trying to assess if I'll be getting many more names & if it'll be worth it yet.

    This is the big benefit! Save few hours dealing with the bargain basement companies due to a cock-up and you have easily saved the yearly membership fee.

    I don't really want to become a member yet - have about 100 domains so not quite worth it and I am probably selling half of them.

    If you get a TAG, but not membership how do you renew your domains? I presume you don't pay £80, do you still have them with another registrar or transfer in / out?

    I presume most would just transfer to the cheapest registrar, process a renewal and then transfer back to your own TAG, however, is the effort involved really worth it to save the costs of joining Nominet and running it all yourself?
