    Received this email today

    Hi Omnial,
I am interested in the domain name: daylightbulb. co.uk.
According to 123-Reg this is available for free.
Please could you arrange for the transfer of this domain name.

Is this some sort of scam?

What will they be giving away next week, my house, my car?

    Regards

    Bruce

When you search for a domain in 123reg taken names come up as

"I own this - transfer it for FREE"

I suspect he has misread that

Reply that the domain name is free but that only the registrant name can be changed and not the registrant address so he'll have to buy your house. Then inform him that a geological survey from 1969 concluded that your house may be sited directly above a rich vein of platinum and that you therefore value it at £5.6 million based on mining potential.

End the email by saying "I must go now the russian gangsters have just pulled up outside again, I hate it when they fight with the gypsies in the back garden".

He won't contact you any further.

Joking aside, I have just spoken to DVLA and they have confirmed that transfering ownership of a vehicle is free too. So I want your car. Today. Delivered to my door. Or else I'll report you to Watchdog.

    That would explain this,

"I’m on 123-reg trying to transfer the domain name xxxxx co.uk which you currently hold. I have gone thro the buying process although it did cost £0.00. After two to three hours of trying to transfer it to my account they’re advising me that you need to change the IPS Tag to ‘123-reg’. Are you able to do this?"

An email we received a few days ago, from real company with full contact details.

    Now that's bad!

Rather than wasting time trying to explain to confused 'buyers', if enough owners just redirect all enquiries to 123reg customer services then maybe they'll eventually get the message and update the wording?

Sorry for the delay, perhaps we could persuade you to accept a free website and hosting as part of the deal, by way of apology.
