Assuming you mean "favicon" (the favourites icon that appears in your favourites list and in your address bar) then it's highly unlikely this could slow any site down.

A favicon is only 16 pixels x 16 pixels so its file size is tiny.

The most likely reason it's still showing up on your computer despite being removed is that favicons are cached by default (another reason why a favicon won't be slowing down your site.) Clear your cache and the favicon will disappear.

While developing a site, to make sure that you are seeing on your computer what everyone else sees on their's, always use CTRL+F5 in your browser to force any cached content to be ignored.

Happy to take a look if you want to publish the URL.

I think it's actually the opposite, without a favicon browsers will actually keep checking to see if you've got one yet, better to serve one once and tell the browser to cache it for a long time.

without a favicon you'll also be generating file not founds (in error log). As davedevelopment says above - most browsers check for the file every page load. I really don't think this is an issue which would slow your loading speed down

Try running firefox/firebug and you'll see a breakdown of all the website components in the 'Net' section of the plugin - this should show you what's slowing things down
