phpBB is the best free software around at the moment in terms of functionality. You can always port stuff over to something like vBulletin if you change your mind in the future, it's easy enough to transfer everything across and there is free functionality built-in to the popular boards that will do it for you. It's worth considering that popular forums are a HUGE time-sink, even with great moderators. You may find the time is better spent elsewhere for greater reward. |

You can reduce spam a lot by making your links nofollow. Do what Acorn does as well and prevent sign ups from free email accounts and don't allow links in signatures below X many posts. Not allowing people to have anchor text for their links helps too. phpBB is best free, vBulletin is best paid. Best bet is to start off with phpBB and then if/when your forum gets popular and you decide to commit fully, migrate to vBulletin. |

If your looking for a good free option I'd go for myBB it's on fantastico, phpBB really isn't for me!
