Just saw a B&Q advert on Channel 5 promoting the domain name kitchen-compare.com.
No news there, it's B&Q after all, but it is weird hearing the voiceover saying "visit kitchen hyphen compare dot com".

Just my random thoughts, but if anyone else thinks it's good or bad, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Odd to use that when their main website is DIY.com

Yeah why not use DIY.com but then I'm sure the previous owner of kitchen-compare is happy

    Interesting stuff.
Wonder if other big names will follow suit.
I expect to hear the word 'hyphen' on the radio, but was strange to hear it on tv with the domain displayed at the same time.
Anyway, thanks for all your input.
    :)

I saw the advert too, "go to kitchen hyphen compare dot com". Not only do they not own kitchencompare.com, but if you attempted to go to http://kitchen-compare.com/ as told, it didn't resolve, you had to go to http://www.kitchen-compare.com/!

They've obviously been shouted at by many people as it now works.

And it seems the redirect from kitchen-compare.com to www.kitchen-compare.com is still not in place! It was just my Firefox cache doing it for me.

This is the problem any true domainer has - companies of all sizes just not understanding domains, and the marketing benefits it gives.

I also think there's an argument that we're all a little too deep in to this, and on face of it people generally find the company their looking for (let's face it if the searcher were to find another site selling or advertising the same thing, doesn't mean they will shop there - and will refine their search / blame Google / blame their computer / blame the missus / blame the cat etc....

I think it looks damn awful when you see a business email address end in @yahoo.co.uk or @msn.com - when they have a domain and website already. Using Outlook Express or other free email software would mean they could use support@domain.co.uk instead. Much more professional - but they just don't get it!!!!

Although bet many of their customers would email to the yahoo email address without giving a second thought....

We are all trying to get out a message about what's right and wrong when in practice the business - nor customer - know or care.

I thought that when I saw the ad - it's bizarre. For a company that obviously understands domains enough to buy diy.com, there must have been a million better names than kitchen-compare. But if it's just a marketing company and not B&Q itself I guess that makes sense. Weird that they would want to be associated with it though. When I saw the ad I just thought it sounded like B&Q had teamed up with an affiliate site or something.
