Can I just give a big pat on the back to everyone who took the time to contribute to the direct.uk debate, and consequently to shaping Nominet's decision. Take a bow. You deserve it.

Regardless of individual views on the process or feelings on the final outcome (we will doubtless still be digesting the mountain of material Nominet have published weeks from now) this has been a fraught, fractious, drawn-out slog of a journey, more than 13 months from start to finish...

The difference between V1 and Nominet's final proposal is like night and day - and that difference is down to a sustained collective effort by hundreds if not thousands of people.

yes, thank you all and thank you Edwin

I on surface I am pleased with decision. 5 years is ok but possibly more would have been better.

I'd like to second that - thanks to everyone who's spent time on attending meetings, consultations, etc. It's been a slow road and I, for one, am grateful for the help and guidance of a number of Acorn members. Obviously a good result for me on the .uk side of things but I truly think (from a non/ very new-domainer perspective) that this is the best way of going about it. Will have to through all of the other attachments, etc.

Agree - well done to those who badgered and endured endless meetings... it wouldn't have been this way if you didn't!

Haven't had a chance to read fully, but scanning and I see it looks a big change to their original proposal (v1)

I still don't agree with their being a NEED and as for their :

"The choice of Internet domains for British consumers and businesses is set to increase "

statement, I'm not sure there will be as all decent domains will simply opt to take on the equivalent .UK for the next 5 years - free.

Which also means no more revenue for Nom for the next 5 years... or am I reading that wrong?

Anyway, who says we'll be using domain names in 5 years anyway - could well be an "app-driven" online experience for the most part!

Yes well done everyone in stopping a very bad and ill thought out initial plan. As Edwin says difference between this version and V1 is difference between night and day. Well done Edwin being quick off the mark in challenging this and to Stephen and all the others including Paul Keating. Been a very stressful 13.5 months watching .co.uk domain prices being hammered.

I think we all ought to give a big thank you to the MP Stephen McPartland who stood up in the House of Commons and asked the question on behalf of businesses with .co.uk domains and I think it was acorn member Monaghan who got him involved. Think that was a big turning point.

I wanted to thank you as well Edwin - I've not been overly drawn into this as it's a hobby not a living for me, but I can tell by the passion and time you and others have spent, that you have helped shape what seems to be a sensible decision at the end of the process, so good work!

Edwin, what do you believe the feedback and reaction would of been if the announced release proposal was the first one presented in the first consultation?

Well done to all those involved! I had assumed that the best outcome for me would be for .UK to have been thrown out, as I never imagined this particular scenario would be possible.

I forgot to actually add the words "Thank you!"

To be honest that's what the Nominet membership is there for. As much as we love to hate them - sometimes deservedly, sometimes not - we should also thank the Nominet board for at least listening.

(I'll duck and cover now thanks! )

Just like to add my personal thanks.. and congratulations .. to Stephen, Edwin and many others who have spent many many hours of their time rallying support, explaining the situation, analysing the proposals, attending meetings and contacting Nominet.

It feels like a semi victory.. in that domaining in its current form will still go on and there is a clearer view of the future, but it does feel that .uk should have just replaced .co.uk. as they still are confusingly similar and domain owners will want both extensions to ensure this isn't an issue...

I'm quite sure that even though some of Nominet's ideas were barmy, they would probably have gone ahead with much of the silliness if some of the members on here had not pointed out the shortfalls to their ambitions.

    Well done chaps!..

A big pat on the back to you Edwin. I can't begin to imagine the amount of time you have spent researching and collating info. If I wore a hat I would take it off to you :)

That feels like a 'fail' to me but it is the price that had to be paid to protect the interests of ordinary folk using .co.uk domains. 'Domainers' are the 'Buy-to-Let Landlords' of the internet. If you don't understand the insult then you don't understand me. Edwin & Stephen rose above the wishes of special interest groups and looked at the situation as a whole. It is for that that I acknowledge their valuable input.
