Depends how you look at it.

Clued in companies may be rushing to buy the .co.uk ahead of the 10 June launch of .uk to GUARANTEE they get the .uk with no "dodgy games" - because they control the .co.uk they automatically will then get the .uk, whereas if they waited until after 10 June there's always a chance that the .co.uk owner will reg the .uk and seek to sell the 2 extensions separately, keep one and sell one, do a deal to sell the .co.uk and reg the .uk moments before transferring the .co.uk etc. i.e. all the things we've been talking about on here for months.

So IF (big if) Sedo can stimulate some interest among such buyers, then they're right to say it's the best time to try for a sale (assuming that is that you are actually trying to sell some domains!) since the buyers will be motivated by time pressure (10 June is a hard and fast deadline by which they have to pull the trigger)

You could also say it's the worst time because you're then giving up the .uk as well, which shuts the door on all the options I outlined further up this post.

So Sedo are "right" from a certain perspective, "wrong" from a different perspective... No score draw :)

I think the release of .uk is really last chance saloon for anybody with non super-premium domains.

I'm sort of hoping that potential buyers are holding off because they think they will be able to pick up the .uk version of domains that .co.uk holders have had for years. When they find out they can't maybe there will be a flurry of activity and the market will have some life. That's my hope anyway!

If nothing happens post June then I really have trouble seeing how there is ever going to be a thriving secondary market across the board. The market at the moment doesn't seem any better than it has been in the last 3 years or so.

Understand what you mean about dodgy games, but surely if you are purchasing the .co.uk after the 10th June, and at the time of transfer, the .uk domain hasn't been regged, wouldn't that mean that the new owner is guaranteed the .uk anyway?

I'm finding at the moment, certainly from a drop perspective, that I'm not looking to catch beyond the 10th June, as I'm unlikely to get both extensions and I feel that is very important. I am however still trying to negotiate the purchase of a couple of domains direct from the owners, hoping to get it done and dusted before the 10th.

Now is the best time to sell a .co.uk because after 10 June, you'll be better off registering the .uk and selling that - possibly promising the .co.uk somewhere in the description bit nobody reads.

It is a continued shame that it is not possible to sell pairs or sets on Sedo (or indeed most domain sales sites). So now is the only time you can sell the .co.uk + .uk rights pair, because now is the only time they are inseparable.

This .co.uk themed auction is quite likely to be the last ever .co.uk themed auction. Future auctions will likely be .uk only.

Assuming that Sedo's themed auction will promote the "buy .co.uk, reg .uk later" aspect, it truly is the best time to sell .co.uk *on Sedo*, particularly if you assume that going back in time is not an option.

    Yes and no.

    One possible scenario:

    1) Buyer looks at .co.uk, sees .uk is unregistered at 7:59am (thinks: "aha, I can use this to get the .uk")
    2) Sale of .co.uk domain agreed at 8am
    3) .uk domain registered by (old) .co.uk owner at 8:01am
    4) .co.uk domain transferred to new owner at 8:02am

Perfectly legitimate unless there is an explicit legal agreement in place to prevent such behaviour, but the .co.uk buyer's expectations may be different.

I know this is a thread about the best time to sell, but it was fairly clear 8am was a for-instance time!

But as for days, the Sedo mail refers to a specific auction. This is "being held from May/06/14 06:00 PM CEST until May/13/14 06:00 PM CEST"

I have submitted some .co.uk domains for the auction, and at no point was there any special terms such as "I promise to complete the transfer before rights to .uk become actionable".

However, for an auction that closes 13th May it would seem to be reasonable for transactions to be completed by 10th June. Probably even within a required date. This timing is unlikely to be accidental.

I'm interested how the pairing will work if you're selling via somewhere like Sedo?

You can't sell a pair of domains, so what do you do? Two separate listings? How do you split the price for the buyer who wants both? 50/50? If so you could legally buy one domain for half price and ditch the other?

It will vary depending on whether one is selling multiple registered domain names or a domain name along with the rights to register a matching .uk. I facilitated the sale of a matching .co.uk/.org.uk pair via Sedo external escrow (i.e. the domain names were not listed on Sedo) and Sedo split the total sale price equally across both domain names.

It seems to me that you're worrying about the listing side rather than the actual completion of the transaction, which is in effect an escrow of a package of elements. If some of those elements are missing from what's agreed, there's no sale.

As far as private transactions go I'm sure buyers and sellers alike will find a way to negotiate and complete the deal. I'm talking about the major marketplaces like Sedo. How will that work as you can't list a pair of domains for sale be it the rights to register the .uk or actually bundling them as a reg'd pair. So yes, the listing, the negotiations, the legal bindings etc when it comes to buying the pair.

I'm guessing they'd have to code something to support it (they've had months of notice already) or otherwise hurriedly cobble something together to make it function.

I guess all .co.uk listings will need to say whether they come with .uk / .uk rights and all the verification that goes with that to prove that really is the case.

Then I guess you'll have situations where Sedo does verify ownership of both. One gets sold privately, then what, does the listing need to be updated? What if it's not and buyers send funds for what they think is the pair etc. The whole thing is a right can of worms for the public aftermarket.

More difficult problems have been surmounted in the past. :) If buyers genuinely want a domain name pair I believe they'll take five minutes to understand the .uk Rights rules. Sedo probably won't turn a blind eye to it unless they are out to ruin their reputation. Ultimately good domain names will sell themselves and bad ones might not. :) I'm not concerned.
