    My take-aways from the Webinar:

.uk's can only be registered through EPP, not WDM (manually)

you must connect to testbed, perform login, perform a contact create and domain create prior to June deadline

    tiers are:
Domains EPP creates per 60 seconds Credit required
    10,000+ 150 £90,000
    1,000-9,999 60 £45,000
    101-1,000 9 £4,500
    1-100 6 £450
*your existing unallocated funds at the time count towards this
**nominet will refund remaining funds after 8th August (they couldn't confirm if the funds are ring-fenced....high interest account anyone!!!)

Failed EPP creates (i.e. domain already registered) count towards your allocation. Can use DAC to query; message will update when registered.

EPP creates can all be sent at once (in line with 6 connections) but won't be actioned immediately (load balanced).

You can increase your allocation by emailing Nominet and adding required credit funds.

They deflected all questions regarding those with the greater budgets (i.e. the big registrars) having an advantage. They believe that if you only want 100 domains, then you don't need as great an EPP create allocation, but fail to understand that you need an equal amount to be competitive, not because you don't want to register as many.

    Other stuff.....

So basically unless you've got 90k sitting around you've got no chance. Way to be fair Nominet

Ah well that's me out. Funny thing is I just registered 1000 domains on the testbed and 1200 yesterday - NOBODY else is testing it seems. I'm not going to waste any more time with it.

Yep ...seems ridiculous they'll let the best domains just be hoovered up in the first second after 2pm drop then watch people just waste their 6 or 9 hits a minute for the rest of day

    Exactly!

One of the questions raised was about registrars that didn't have the expertise to test EPP and create the code for the EPP production system. Apparently Nominet were going to go away and have a think about what could be done for those bods. Although I can't exactly see Nominet releasing code that has the sole purpose of hammering their own registry.

Did they elaborate on this? Does that mean requests could be prioritised?

I think they were going to go away and see if they wouldn't be able to recommend an EPP provider, rather than offer a solution. They could at least offer WDM for manual registrations.

They may have said more, my head is spinning, but as it is now, EPP creates are handled as and when the system can cope using load balancing which ultimately means first isn't always the winner, but they suggested it might go one step further and through monitoring, EPP creates might take much longer to receive a response, but ultimately won't stop you sending all 6, 9, 60, 150 at one time; you'll only be limited by connections, not replies.

Only nominet could give you an arbitrary figure and then *reduce* it later lol I guess they don't know in business it's best to underestimate and give your clients a pleasant surprise rather than kicking them in the teeth after 5 days solid work. I wonder who'll be driving round in new lambos now.....:p

Any of you catchers offering a 'first 6 requests' load?

I suspect anyone that has gone to the effort of signing up, depositing funds to meet Nominets criteria, and developed a working script will be hoping those first 6 creates yield some results for themselves rather than anyone else :D

They have probably just killed what little interest people had in the extension.

The more I think about 150 requests (£90,000) vs 6 requests (£450) it’s an absolute joke:

We pay the same membership fee and we are all members of the same company. We are being treated differently based upon on our capacity to pay £90,000 in advance.

Is it time for an EGM petition? Shall we start collecting signatures?

It's very badly thought out (surprise). Just not worth the aggravation. By this logic someone spending £40k (assuming they couldn't get 45k limit for example) would have the same request limits as someone spending £455. I understand the principle I guess - it's just horribly disproportional.

It feels suspiciously like Nominet looking after their chums to me. They can only see the £ signs

The more you look at it, the less appealing it is. £4,500 in the coffers, to achieve 9 creates per minute, compared with 150 for their buddies at the large registrars. Yes there is a lot to choose from, but .uk will be so diluted as a result of this, only the very best and obvious domains will hold value worthy of the time.

Has anyone seen any of the big registrars marketing this as a service to it's customers, or all we all assuming they'll just take names for themselves and then sell them on?

    Ignoring tiers (or tears)

    rpm____d/c amount_per request______odds
    150_____£90,000_____£600_________67%
    60______£45,000_____£750_________27%
    9_______£4,500______£500_________4%
    6_______£450________£75__________3%

    rpm - requests per minute
    d/c - deposit or credit
odds - comparison based on rpm

I hope all the big boys and Nom get burned to hell on this - i have seen no real interest in .UK's and how Nom can say it's in the interest of the Internet to add more sh*t to the pile of sh*t that is all the new ridiculous TLD's worldwide I have no idea... oh sorry I do - it's to prop up the fund for bonuses and ridiculously high salaries for what is a monopoly...

Those odds are per credit account (not per linked membership).

United Internet could have 90K credit accounts for 1&1, Fasthosts, Sedo etc

Godaddy + HEG could have 90K credit accounts for Godaddy , 123-reg , Monster , Heart , Paragon

Tucows + Enom could have 90K credit accounts for Enom , Tucows , Ascio

Centralnic + Key-systems could have 90K credit accounts for Key-Systems, InternetBS, Moniker, Instra

Namesco + LCN could have 90K credit accounts for Namesco and LCN

We would be better off doing a deal with one of their reseller brands for this drop?
