£10 for 8 is too much, unless they are all award winning and of a significantly higher level altogether than a good local butcher.

If it were me, I'd be looking to keep the price down and worry more about margins when scale helped renegotiate prices on the supply side.

There might be more room for margin on upselling.

I have delivered a box of steaks from a local meat factory www.donaldrussell.com to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh.
When the Queen has a garden party, she also hosts a private dinner in the evening for more important guests.
Someone had forgotten to order the steaks, so it was a rush job!

@Sean, I would listen to Phil here, he has a long history of this. There are services such as Cratejoy which is designed for subscription models such as this, you don't need to start with a full custom site, but get someone to customise it for you.

It is a lot when just comparing the prices for the high end stuff in a supermarket, but I would suggest he tries to add value. Find great, small scale, enthusiastic sausage producers, not butchers, unless they are very high end butchers. If he had 2 different producers' sausages each month that's only 24 producers he needs to find to last a year. Then tell the subscribers exactly why they are great, each and every month. As I subscriber I want to know the exact provenance of the pigs, of every ingredient, the background story to the producer, their suggested recipes etc. As a subscriber I would then be happy in paying a premium for knowing that someone is taking me on a tour of the best sausages in the country. Package them really nicely, make it a treat to look forward to each month, not just a couple of packs of bangers in a polybag.

He would then need to approach the small scale producers and ask how much for 50/100/500/1000 (depending upon how successful it is) packs of 4 sausages, if we are going to sell them, all at once, to sausage enthusiasts around the country, whilst telling their story? It will be seen as brilliant marketing by the producer, this isn't about negotiating a cheap rate because of volume, but because of exposure. Every small producer wants, and pays for, exposure. Get the numbers big enough and they'll practically give them to him.

There are a million food blogs he could reach out to, feature their favourite sausage recipe in one month?

Then there are sides. I've met Ben from Proper Beans - £4 for a small pot of fresh beans! But they are fantastic, and are starting to sell. Or other "artisan" producers. One couple of women locally do the most amazing pop up barbecue restaurants, they are always over subscribed (check them out, Hang Fire Smokehouse), they do superb smoked hotdog sausages. The small scale food business is growing fast in this country.

@Sean - go back and read this again, there are some parallels.

Anyway, enough ranting from me. Good luck Sean, if it works out I'll be happy try it out. If you want anyone to bounce ideas off I'd be happy to help, just PM me.

The success of this demonstrates the importance of tapping in to a popular niche. The body building sector has quite a big online following.

Musclefood is actually run by the people who run Westin Gourmet. Just different branding and marketing of the same product and they do it really well.

I think the overall company is http://www.deliciousmarketinggroup.com/ who started by running casino affiliate sites.

Pick one viable niche, one site, work really hard, be willing to take risks and invest. Don't jump on projects after projects.

Maybe, maybe not. I would argue a valuable EMD or Good Brandable is part of the battle when launching an internet business on a smaller budget. I would also argue that someone who has been managing small affiliate sites would still have transferable skills and a substantial leg up compared to someone who maybe a pig farmer.

I think that probably 50% of the people on this forum could probably do alright with a good EMD in a decent niche with little capital. A lot of the key skills will be similar and its surprising how quickly you learn along the way. Ultimately even if it fails you will have learnt valuable lessons and experience from that and would have a greater chance of success with the next idea.

I know a little about a lot and that mantra has done ok

You don't become successful by listening to people who haven't

Isn't is a bit precarious to start quite a demanding business (subscription sausages by post) involving a lot of up front cost and time, in a very competitive market, simply because one happened to register the relevant domain name?

Picking up on an earlier post, isn't it less risky going down the adsense and/or affiliate route?

I guess my underlying questions are: Do adsense and affiliate marketing still work or are they broken business models? If they do still work, isn't that a less risky route to monetisation?

Business viability should be the first consideration, then consider the domain.

I think a lot of people do try and go about this the completely wrong way round. You should be coming up with a viable business model, and then finding a domain to fit it. Not trying to shoehorn a business model into a random domain you happen to own.

A brilliant domain gives you credibility though... if you have a true category defining domain I'd consider doing it the other way around. So if I owed Sausages.co.uk I'd perhaps look into subscription sausages even if I had no previous interest in that industry. I wouldn't say to myself "oh look buysausagesonline.co.uk is free to register, I think I'll set up a company there".

Its less risky in that it'll cost you less time/money to set up. But there are a whole load of other problems. How do you legitimately add value to end users with an affiliate sausage site? How do you promote it? There will be a lot more options open to you there if you're an end destination, since you own the lifetime value of a new acquired customer. Thats not the case as an affiliate.

Yes they still work, but its a lot harder. The days of an exact match domain (often .org.uk or .net to keep the costs down), a Textbroker.com account to buy some bland content, and TextLinkAds and digital point accounts to buy extremely crap links to make it rank, are long gone.

If anyone is thinking about the fish pedicure idea, bear in mind that fish don't have feet, so there probably isn't much business there!

I would appreciate not calling me sport. Its a respect thing. I feel as if you are belittling me.

Without getting into finances as it is crude. I think you will find my bank balance is substantially greater than yours. I have not made money through affiliate sites, in fact i have probably only made 10k from affiliate sites in the last 5 years. That is not my niche or expertise.

How about I pm you my work address and you can come down and tell me that my business is worthless, dont worry il tell the secretary to let you in. I am trying to be helpful. You sir are being a dick!
