I can sometimes match up Sedo offers and lander enquiries and deal direct but in general I do find Sedo useful. It's a level playing field if anyone wants to take on Sedo and charge lower commissions .. Not easy.

I have always thought of Sedo as terrible, but never having used it myself, just hearing bad things about it. But from this experience, it has been good. Although the commission is quite high and like someone mentioned, if you have invested £*** into a domain it does place your margins a bit smaller.

For some reason, the last comment I saw on the thread for the one I replied to; which clearly was a similar point to yours...I think that is what you mean, otherwise I'm lost!

After 20 years+ of buying and selling UK domains I can tell you that this scenario is a fantasy kept alive by SEDO, Afternic, Buy Domains etc - that their 'Marketplace' offers some perceived value for your commission, is really just there to make domainers feel this magical place is visited often by non-domainers.

Any sale you make via the marketplace 99.9% would have taken place anyway, Domainers know where to look, what to do and where to go, and the non-domainers don't know any different. (An auction platform is subtly different value proposition).

When a non technical person wants to register a domain in today's Internet what do they do... there is no McDonalds or Burger King in this world it's the first or second service they visit.

At the end of the day if people are making sales and happy, what does it all matter!

Agreed. The first thing a real enduser does if they want to do to buy a domain is type it in and see what's there. I'd rather deal with them than constant lowball offers from other domainers at these marketplaces. But everyone's business model is different - just be aware that lack of patience can cost you thousands.

I'd like to think that is the case, and is a reason why I'm considering just integrating an escrow service within my own holding pages, but one of my recent sales did come from the end-user searching relevant keywords to their project and finding my domain listed. They weren't particularly after a .co.uk, but being UK based, felt it was a good fit. You might be right that non-domainers don't know any different, but some may seek out platforms they consider to be trustworthy, even if we know or think differently. Opens up an interesting debate for another thread though, "do platform based landing pages yield better results"....I suspect the answer may be similar to "how close was I to catching that domain"...no one knows (well, apart from Nominet).

Well I know myself from selling direct and selling on sedo for almost a decade. Sales (offers usually) might be less but the amount has been more than 10x. You just have to be prepared to walk away from people who have the 'well we were looking for similar keywords' attitude and only deal with the 'we want THAT name' people.

I think it's not very bad to list your domains with a higher BIN at different marketplaces, I have made a few four figures sales doing this way.

Just an update on this. On Friday Sedo closed the transaction and noted that the payment had been made. I requested it via wire with IBAN and it hasn't arrived yet. I'm assuming it will arrive tomorrow at some point, being a working day? Does this sound about right with everyone?

IBAN can take up to four days, but I've never had any problems with Sedo payments once they are in motion and some have come next working day.

On the subject of experiences with Sedo, they now remove names from accounts a few days before they expire if suspended which is surprising given number of domainers who renew on last day. You get an email saying cannot verify ownership - even though whois still shows you as owner. I have given up adding them back.

SEDO do not give you info such as name, or ip of the potential buyer. I think this is important during any negotiating as you might be able to work out who they are / or representing.

I firmly believe that if someone wants to buy your domain then they will buy it regardless of marketplace. XX % will add up over time, to a small fortune.

I'm toying with selling a .com I have. What commission would I pay to Sedo? Is there any reason not to market it through multiple outlets simultaneously or do you need to pay money up front, rather than it just being payment upon sale?

For .uk domains of all kinds, I'm very happy with the Domainlore model.

SEDO charge 10-20% of sale price. Nothing to stop you or fees for listing your domains simultaneously on sedo, dan, afternic with "make offer" for max exposure, but using another / your own landing page.
