From the 1st March the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) will monitor websites run by UK companies / people, regardless of the domain extension.

Read about it here: http://www.cap.org.uk/CAPServices/Digital-remit-advice.aspx

From March 1st, the ASA’s online remit will be extended to cover marketing communications on organisations’ own websites and in other non-paid-for space under their control. The UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (the CAP Code) will apply in full to marketing messages online, including the rules relating to misleading advertising, social responsibility and the protection of children.

Has you checked your sites are in compliance?

I had heard about it from a friend who is involved with the tobacco industry some of there marketing (especially in china) you would never get away with in the uk or anywhere else… They thought it quite comical especially the bit about advertising being legal, decent, honest and truthful they said "what would be left..?" Most cover there tracks offshore companies, ghost etc and just how the government thought they would police it with all the billions of sites/ adverts etc out there was mind boggling…

There are specific rules for different types of websites I'm just reading, lottery sites "Marketing communications must not suggest that participating in a lottery can provide an escape from personal, professional or educational problems such as loneliness or depression", motoring "Marketers must not make speed or acceleration the main message of their marketing communications" so go faster stripes are out then!

and so on...

I wonder if non uk companies would use it to get there uk rivals ads etc removed buy exploiting it.... Allowing them to say what they want...

It was always to be expected, I was actually surprised that it wasn't already in their remit.

Got to love the governments stratergy though - We will cut your budget by 20% plus give you a 50% increase in workload. Bet the bods at the ASA are having heart attacks
